Should Irish AFL players be included in the squad at the expense of lads who have stayed at home and committed themselves to gaelic football? Administrator (None) - Posts: 2275 - 28/09/2017 17:06:13 2051405 Link 0 |
Nope. Sport is about winning, not taking part. gotmilk (Fermanagh) - Posts: 4971 - 28/09/2017 17:15:54 2051409 Link 0 |
Its not a jolly , put up the best 23 available if that includes Oz then so be it , would imagine the three lads out there will be invaluable experience wise anyways , can see a counter argument but that's just my take Damothedub (Dublin) - Posts: 5193 - 28/09/2017 17:20:58 2051413 Link 0 |
23 is too small a number of a panel to start with. You need 30 with injuries etc imo. Laois76 (Laois) - Posts: 1270 - 28/09/2017 17:25:20 2051415 Link 5 |
Agree but I'd bring 30 fit lads with no injuries ...

It's not Gaelic football so why not select from from all forms of sport. Some of the rugby lads might do well at it. neverright (Roscommon) - Posts: 1648 - 28/09/2017 19:24:53 2051444 Link 0 |
It's like this a if you go to a swingers party you'll have more joy if you bring the wife. Offside_Rule (Antrim) - Posts: 4058 - 28/09/2017 19:45:00 2051451 Link 3 |
It's NOT Gaelic football but a hybrid, mongrel type game so if Irish Aussie Rules fellas who are eligible and up to the standard want to play so what? Ulsterman (Antrim) - Posts: 9816 - 28/09/2017 19:52:43 2051455 Link 0 |
should be none going, just a jolly for the suits in croke park would be better if they stayed at home and tried to sort the games at home whilst they are dying on their feet in places

you don't see rugby bastardising their sport, what is the actual purpose of this game anyhow and who does it benefit?

I don't see an issue with it. Its not gaelic football, its a combination of two sports. The lads were all born and grew up in Ireland and shouldn't be denied the chance to represent their country just because they took a shot at a professional sport in another country. Bring the best players available and try and win it. bennybunny (Cork) - Posts: 3917 - 28/09/2017 20:58:57 2051483 Link 0 |
its hardly a finishing blow to the association by sending 23 lads to Oz for a couple of weeks

That's a different argument. The question wasn't about the legitimacy of the 'sport' but about who is eligible to play it. Start another thread on the hybrid game as a 'sport' if you wish.

I don't mind it, our AFL players will have the best idea of how to play the AFL side of the game. Joe Kernan can pick who he wants Hill16Army (Dublin) - Posts: 88 - 28/09/2017 21:26:43 2051490 Link 0 |
Super idea, Connacht could play Tasmania, the Dubs could play New Zealand to spice it up.

would be getter putting the effort into the railway cup and making it a proper tournament were more players from each province would get the chance to play with the best players in their against the best of each province. my gripe is how does this benefit or showcase gaelic games to a wider audience apart from showing the scouts what talent to try to poach to their professional game

It brings an international element and gives players the chance to play against professional athletes. I can understand why people might not like it. It is divisive for sure. I think it is brilliant. bennybunny (Cork) - Posts: 3917 - 28/09/2017 22:27:05 2051509 Link 0 |
I'd like to see a return of the Railway cup myself, so long as its promoted properly I think it could be a decent event. As for the International Rules series I wouldn't agree that its much of a shop window for scouts. Most GAA players on the squad are established and of a certain age. I'd say the days of listening to Aussie promises are behind them. Its the Minor/Under 21 age that they are interested in. If anything I believe the series is a bit of fun and a chance to show that our elite players can hold their own against the pros. Rugby league? All modern sports have 'evolved' from more primitive beginnings.
