The GAA and the Gaelic Players Association have released a joint statement outlining the beginning of mediation into the Fermanagh player dispute.

Ten Fermanagh players have withdrawn the county playing panel since the turn of the year as dissatisfaction within the county sank to new lows.

The situation triggered the involvement of the GAA and the GPA, who had outlined in a recognition agreement signed earlier this year procedures to resolve similar disputes such as those which dogged Limerick and Cork in recent times.

Officials of both bodies met with members of Fermanagh County Board and Fermanagh player representatives on Thursday night.

A GAA/GPA statement read, "The meeting was held in accordance with the Disputes Resolution protocols as outlined in the recently announced Recognition Agreement.

"The meeting was most constructive and addressed a number of issues highlighted by both the players and the County Officers present. A report on the meeting will be discussed by the Fermanagh Management Committee at its scheduled monthly meeting on Monday night next.

"In accordance with agreed protocols no further comment on the matter will be made by any party until after the Fermanagh meeting on Monday night."
