All-County Intermediate Championship @ RGU Downpatrick

Carryduff - v- Bredagh

An entertaining contest which had commanded the attention of the travelling supporters from both clubs and neutrals alike was effectively decided by a sideline decision in the first period of extra time.

Carryduff had the first opportunity but Ronan Lawlor shot wide before Donal Hughes opened the scoring for Bredagh in the third minute of the first half. Within a minute Daniel Guinness converted Carryduff's first free to level affairs. Bredagh bossed the next ten minute period with two points from midfielder Joe Shields (5th and 8th) and Hughes (6th) as Carryduff struggled to control Bredagh's inter-passing play. Half-back Tommy McElroy made an unchecked 60 metre run to get on the end of a pass and slot the ball over the Carryduff crossbar (14th) and give the Ormeau Road outfit a five point advantage before Carryduff managed to assert themselves and make some inroads into the game.

Full-forward Joe McFlynn scrambled a point (15th) but Brian Rice pointed at the other end of the pitch to restore Bredagh's five point cushion. In an upbeat five minute period Carryduff altered their game and drove at Bredagh and were rewarded with three points from play in succession from Ronan Lawlor (16th), Michael McGrath (18th) and Joe McFlynn (20th). As Carryduff increased their intensity Bredagh full-back Declan O'Hara was signalled to the sideline by An Ríoct referee Gavin Corrigan and was replaced by Kevin Doran.

Alan Davidson converted a free (22nd) for Bredagh before Donal Hughes missed an opportunity. On a second occasion, half-back Tommy McElroy slipped into attack and converted (24th) to give Bredagh a two point advantage. Bredagh will consider themselves unlucky to have seen Brian Rice's effort rattle off the Carryduff crossbar. Conor Francis added Bredagh's ninth point in the 27th minute of the half but Joe McFlynn's point in the dying moments of the half saw the teams meet the break with Bredagh leading 0-09 to 0-06.

The second turned out to be a riveting affair that kept both sets of supporters roaring support for their teams until the final whistle. Brian Rice extended Bredagh's advantage, pointing in the first minute of play. Carryduff struggled to exert themselves and James Guinness's 35th minute point helped their cause but things began to look a little ominous when Davidson converted a free for Bredagh (37th) and added a further point from play from possession from the Carryduff kick-out. Now trailing by five points, Carryduff had some serious questions to answer. And they answered them in style, much to the delight of their support.

Peter Lavery (36th) and James Guinness (40th) both picked up yellow cards for impetuous tackles as Carryduff roused themselves to meet the Bredagh challenge. From the 40th minute to the final moments of the game, they simply dominated. in a three minute period between the 42nd and 44th minutes, Michael McGrath, James Guinness and Peter Lavery had added points from play. The pressure was maintained and further scores came from James Guinness (46th) and Michael McGrath (48th) to level the game.

Bredagh certainly looked rattled as a five point lead evaporated and the scores were suddenly levelled.

A huge roar went up when Peter Lavery's 49th minute point from play put Carryduff into the lead for the first time in the game and was echoed when James Guniness's 51st minute point extended the advantage. The pressure was maintained. James Guinness missed and opportunity 53 minutes in but drove Carryduff three points ahead, converting a free kick in the 55th minute.

just when it looked as if Carryduff had secured victory, Fatigue from their efforts and some poor decision-making and reckless tackling afforded Bredagh opportunities from free kicks and Alan Davidson converted two opportunities in the 58th and 60th minutes of play to eat into Carryduff's lead and leave the narrowest of margins between the teams. The tannoy announced that there would be at least two minutes added time and they proved to be a frantic two minutes as the teams battled to win and maintain possession and press for those vitals scoring opportunities. In the dying seconds of the game Breadgh staged a last attack and, desperate not to see a goal opportunity emerge, Carryduff defender McConnell was dismissed on a black card. The consistent Alan Davidson stepped up to take a pressure -laden place kick. He converted it to take a thrilling game to extra time, levelling the sides at thirteen points apiece.

Carryduff's Daniel Guinness restored Carryduff's advantage pointing from play in the first minute of extra time. Bredgah's Kevin Doran kicked wide before Davidson converted a free kick (62nd) to level the sides again.

With the game in the melting pot, the crucial call from the linesman on the town side of the pitch effectively influenced its outcome. After an innocuous collision Carryduff half-forward and captain Ronan Lawlor was dismissed on a red card after the linesman conferred with the referee. Supporters from both camps had no idea why the red card was issued but the reduction of Carryduff to fourteen men effectively sealed their fate from them.

Inthe seventh minute of extra time Bredagh broke down the depleted Carryduff defence and Kevin Doran finished to the Carryduff net. Carryduff mounted an attack and were awarded a penalty which Josh Connery converted to level affairs again but a point from Davidson eight minutes into extra time gave Bredagh the edge.

The final ten minutes of extra time saw Bredagh wear down an exhausted fourteen man Carryduff: they used the numerical advantage well to keep Carryduff chasing possession.

Points and a goal from Conor Francis in the opening moments of the second period of extra time left the gap too large for Carryduff to close and Bredagh sensibly played possession football interspersed with breaks for substitutions to keep Carryduff on the ropes. Two further points (73rd and 74th) and a goal from Alan Davidson were the icing on Bredagh's cake and Conor Francis kicked the last point of the day.

Bredagh progressed on a 3-21 to 1-17 final score but Carryduff will consider themselves very unlucky to have seen this game slip from their control after the 62nd minute dismissal of their experienced captain. Congratulations to Bredagh and commiserations to a spirited Carryduff outfit,

All-County Under 16 Football League 28 July 2016 Carryduff - v - Burren

Carryduff Under-16s claimed the All-County Under-16 league title when they overcame St Mary's Burren at Páirc Aodha Dhuibh on Thursday evening.

A determined Carryduff played some neat football from the first moments of this game to set themselves up to dominate the first half Carryduff settled with a goal from midfielder, Eoin Maguire four minutes in. Ciaran Sherry added a point from play (5th) as Carryduff forced two excellent saves within a few moments of each other from Burren netminder Jack Brady. Carryduff's second goal, finished by Adam Loughran, came all the way from a sweeping move from the heart of their own defence.

Burren's first score came ten minutes in when Ciaran Bradley pointed from play. Ryan Tweedy converted a 12th minute free before Eóin Rooney secured Carryduff's third goal in the thirteenth minute. Burren persevered but were met with stout resistance from a Carryduff defence where Michael Lawson and Lorcan Toal were controlling affairs in front of the Carryduff posts, effectively forcing Burren to attack from wide angles.

Ryan Tweedy picked up a yellow card just before he pointed (16th) to extend Carryduff's lead to eleven points and further scores from Oran O'Neill (19th) and Rory Reilly (20th) left Burren chasing the game.

Burren managed points from play from Sean fitzpatrick (18th) and Danny Magill (22nd) before full forward Ross Garrivan fisted an incoming ball to the Carryduff net in the 23rd minute.

Carryduff responded by forcing a third spectacular save from Jack Brady before tagging on a further point from Rory Reilly (26th) a goal from full forward Oran O'Neill (28th) and two further goals from Adam Loughran (29th and 30th). A further point from Peter Duncan (30th) gave Carryduff a 6-07 to 1-03 half-time advantage.

Despite Burren's best efforts, Carryduff met their challenges in the second half. Burren's first score of the half from Danny Magill (31st) was responded to by scores from Peter Loughran (35th), Peter Duncan (40th) and Ryan Tweedy (51st). Burren had furthe rpoints from Magill (43rd) and Conor Murphy (44th) before Danny Magill bagged their second goal in the 49th minute. However, it was immediately cancelled out as Oran O'Neill (50th) finished to the Burren net. A Burren point from Ross Garrivan (51st) was similarly responded to by a Carryduff point from Tweedy and two Burren points from Sean McSwiggan (54th) and Magill (55th) were responded to by Carryduff's ninth goal from Oran O'Neill in the 56th minute. The final score of the game was a converted Carryduff free (Tweedy, 58th).

East Down Under-14 'A' Football Championship Carryduff - v - Bredagh

Carryduff Under-14s overcame Bredagh in the East Down 'A' Championship clash when the sides met at Páirc Aodha Dhuibh on Monday night but despite having got off to a commanding start when they led by 2-05 to a single point at the end of the first quarter, Carryduff could have seen this game slip way from them. Goals from Niall Tunney in the 5th minute and from Jude Lynam in the 12th minute along with points from Eamonn Blaney, Joseph Toland, two from Joseph Tunney and one from Lynam saw Carryduff press an early advantage. Bredagh's first score came when Ultan Curran found the Carryduff net 20 minutes in and Enda Gargin added a point two minutes later to steady their nerves. Aidan Steele added a second Bredagh point with 24 minutes gone but Joshua Toland's 25th minute point saw Carryduff end the half with a seven point advantage on a scoreline of 2-06 to 1-02.

It appeared that Carryduff seemed to think the job was done with thirty minutes of football played. The second half however proved to be a more testing affair and Bredagh will count themselves unlucky not to have come away with something more for their efforts.

Jude Lynam extended Carryduff's advantage with a point in the 7th minute of the second half but Carryduff were not to score again for another 14 minutes. Meanwhile Bredagh piled on some pressure and a goal from Timmy Cunnane (42nd) and converted points from Oran Magee (47th) and Cunnane (48th) brought them right back into the game. Timmy Cunanne's second goal (52nd) left a single point between the teams. The teams then traded points as Euan Duncan (53rd) and Eamonn Blaney (56th) pointed for Carryduff and Oran Magee converted a free (54th) and added a point from play (57th).

Ultan Curran could have stolen the victory for Bredagh but kicked wide of goal with barely a minute left on the clock. Eamonn Blaney's last gasp goal secured the victory for Carryduff but the 3-10 to 3-06 final scoreline flattered a Carryduff side who progress to the next round.

The Carryduff team was;- Leo McMahon, Ben Tweedy, Dominic Tinnelly, Lorcan Guinness, Conor Donaldson, Fionn Rodgers, Eamon Swail, Conor Doherty, Dermot Donaldson, Odhran Sherry, Joseph Tunney, Niall Tunney, Eamonn Blaney, Jude Lynam, Joseph Toland.

Carryduff Senior Ladies claim League Title

Down LGFA Senior League Carryduff v Bredagh

Despite the absence of a number of key players from both sides as a consequence of holiday arrangements, Carryduff ran out comfortable winners on a 4-16 to 3 -05 scoreline when these neighbours met at Páirc Aodha Dhuibh. Kate Mc Kay led by example from the throw-in kicking points from play in the 2nd, 3rd and 12th minutes of play. Leah Beattie had also added a score in the 9th minute and another in the 11th to give Carryduff a five point advantage half way through the first quarter .

Aimee Lavery (17th) extended Carryduff's lead and Leah Beattie added her second point (21st) to give the home side a six point cushion before Bredagh got their first score from a converted free (McFarland, 24th). Bredagh's second point came from a converted fre (McFarland, 24th) before Carryduff responded with points from Beattie (25th) and Emer McKay 926th). Bredagh's McFarland added a further score before the break to leave the half-time score reading Carryduff 0-09 to Bredagh's 0-02.

Leah Beattie may have missed the first opportunity of the second half but she finished to the Bredagh net in the 32nd minute to set Carryduff up for a real shot at the League Title.

Bredagh replied with a point ( McFarland, 33rd) and a goal From their industrious centre-half forward (McFarland, 34th) and a converted free ( Mc Frland 36th) before she found the Carryduff net (36th) again to make a game of affairs and bring Bredagh to 2-04 to 2-09 within the home side

Moments later Michelle Magee was alert enough to stick a 13m free into the back of the Bredagh net as Bredagh defenders were agreeing their defensive strategies. Despite the conversion of a free (McFarland, 36th) and a goal from play (McFarland, 37th), combined with a further point (38th), Carryduff found the Bredagh net again courtesy of Michelle Magee (41st) and from there Carryduff went on to boss the game holding Bredagh to a single point (McFaland, 48th) and a goal from MC Nicholl (43rd) and point from McFarland (48th) as Aimee Lavery ( 44th), Kate Mc Kay(45th), Emer McKay (47th) added points from play before substitute Niamh Napier (53rd) weaved her way through the Bredagh defence to finish to the net.
