Rampant Buncrana cruise to victory after storming second half performance

Gaeil Fhánada 0-13
Buncrana 3-15

A punishing and clinical second half performance from Buncrana saw them ease to victory over a tired looking Fanad side on Sunday. This win puts the Division Three title at arms reach for Buncrana while for Fanad it's another year in Division Three. Fanad put it up to today's visitors and indeed were probably the better side in the first half but some of Buncrana's score taking in the first half were a joy to watch with Oran Doherty, Darach O'Connor and John Campbell pulling the strings.

It was blow for blow in the first half. Buncrana raced into a lead which Fanad clawed back. Buncrana again pushed the lead out to three points but Fanad drew level and eventually went ahead at 9 points to 8. Niall Carr from frees, Mark Friel, Oisin Shiels and Jimmy Coyle on the mark as was young Bernard McGettigan. Conor McGonigle was also exceptional in the first half. Buncrana closed out the half strongest and two big marks from county panelist Caolan McGonagle laid the platform for a goal and a point which left the half time score:

Gaeil Fhánada 0-10
Buncrana 1-11

Both teams must be complimented for their attacking intent and score taking but it was the Buncrana side that took command in the second half. The stats show Fanad had 18 attacks but had only 3 points to show while the Inishowen side had the same number but mustered 2-4. Campbell notched his second while McGonagle scored an unorthodox goal which on other days may have been disallowed. Fanad were incensed at some of the decisions made over the day at critical times but ultimately their inability to take their scores was their downfall.

It looks like a break of two weeks before Fanad welcome Convoy to Portsalon for their penultimate league game whereas Buncrana can all but seal promotion and the league title when they host high flying Naomh Brid.

A disappointing day for Fanad who were simply too slack in possession in the second half but credit to Buncrana for the pressure they put on in the second half.
