Parish League

What a feast of football we had on Friday evening in Páirc Uí Shiadhail where the Parish League finals took place for U6, U8, U10 and U12 boys and girls.

The U6/U8’s final was a fantastic advertisement for the game where the two teams battled it out to see who would be champions of the Parish for 2020. After almost an hour of football the teams could not be separated and it was wisely decided not to go to a penalty shoot out to determine a winner. A draw was an unexpected but fair result for this group of players who hopefully will be back for more next year. The players of this section were:

Aodh Walsh, Jimmy Peoples, Ellie Peoples, Noah Kerr, Conán Doherty, Michael McConigley, Aedan Mc Conigley, Vivian McGee, Joseph Carr, Orla Clinton, Mia Carlin, Caleb Friel, Rhea Friel, Alice Gibbons, Adam Heraghty, Ruairí Friel, Cillian Martin, Clodagh Mc Ateer, Cathair Mc Bride, Patrick Mc Conigley, Sophie Mc Elwaine,  Ben Mc Gonigle, Liam Peoples, Roisin Walsh, Daragh Wilson.

In the U12/10 section, as per the previous weeks, there was nothing but a kick of the ball between any of the teams. It is really hard to pick out any individual players for mention as there was excellent fielding and kicking skills on display and teamwork was evident throughout. Eventually Colin McBrides team were victorious with solid defence on display from Kieran Carr, Ronan Gibbons and Erin Logue. Kaylagh Sweeney and Oisín Lynch fielded some great ball in midfield while the forwards of Colin McBride, Aisling Duffy and Erin Logue were very accurate up front. The future of Fanad Geals looks secure with all these skills on display.

Conn Mc Laughlin, Shaun Ward, Harry Blaney, Ronan Gibbons, Amy Mc Ateer, Elena Gibbons, Clodagh Mc Ateer, Maeve Sweeney, Cillian Gilmore, Dan Martin, Michael Peoples, Donchadha Dorrian, Sinead Duffy, Aoibheann Callaghan, Erin Carlin, Rian Jackson, Ronan Wilson, Kieran Carr, Colin Mc bride, Oisin lynch, Aisling Duffy, Eva Martin, Keylah Sweeney, Erin logue, Ronan Mc Veigh, Jack Dunleavy, Christian Gibbons, Ben Mc Bride, Conor Callaghan, Tiernan Kerr, Ava Mc Elwaine, Orla Mc Grenaghan, Caoimhe Kerr, Sarah Peoples, Grace Begley, Iosaf Mc Ateer, Cormac Dunleavy.

Well done to all involved and a special thanks to the parents for bringing their children every week. That brings an end to the Parish League for this year but there will be more football before the season ends. Mangers will be in contact.

Seniors defeat Red Hughs

Gaeil Fhánada 2:14 Red Hughs 3:08

The seniors continued their winning ways in the Regional League on Sunday afternoon, recording a three point victory over Red Hughs in Portsalon.

Gaeil Fhánada had a considerable breeze at their backs in the opening period, but it was Red Hughs who conjured the first two attacks. Firstly an opportunist slap goalwards from an acute angle was dealt with by Shaun Friel between the sticks before a point from their midfielder opened the scoring. Within a few minutes, Gaeil Fhánada registered three points, Seamie Friel twice and Mark Mc Ateer on target. The Gaels were well on top during the opening period, but were wasteful at times, spurning three opportunities to move further into the lead. Seamie fired over his third, while Oisín Shiels finished off a move just after the water break to give the Gaels their fifth point. Red Hughs fired again, but the last two points of the half came from the Fanad men, the first from Paddy Heraghty on the right and the second was Friel’s fourth of the afternoon which left the Gaels five points to the good, seven points to two when Martin Coll called an end to the opening period.

Oisín Mc Fadden fired over in the opening exchanges of the second period, before the games first goal arrived. Decent play from Jimmy Coyle, and then Fergal Friel who drove through the centre of the Red Hughs defence released Mark Mc Ateer who expertly found the top corner. The Gaels played some good football for the next period with Paddy Carr providing another tidy score. The visitors fired over two points of their own in this period to keep the scoreboard ticking over. Oisín Mc Fadden started and finished the next attack which resulted in him getting his second point after good build up play from Alan. Seamie Nanny then fired over before the Gaels second goal. Paddy Carr did the donkey work out the field and released the ball to Seamie who fed Alan who finished from close range. Alan returned the favour soon after, playing a neat pass to Séimí after calling a forward mark and the Doaghbeg man fisted over the bar. The Gaels seemed to be in cruise control at that stage, but Red Hughs weren’t happy with that, and stepped up their game. A goal and a point closed the gap slightly, but Seamie did respond again for the men in blue in white. The visitors very much moved into the ascendancy after the water break, and fired two points to reduce the gap to nine. They then hit two quick goals and within the blink of an eye, they had reduced the gap to three points. The Fanad rearguard restored the composure in the final stages and stood firm for the remainder. A point each was exchanged in the final five minutes, which ensured a three point victory.

Shaun Friel, Odhrán Shiels, Fergal Friel, Brandon Mc Clafferty, Mark Mc Conigley, Oisín Shiels (0:01), Paddy Heraghty (0:01),

Reserves suffer narrow defeat in Championship opener

Cloich Cheann Fhaola 1:05 Gaeil Fhánada 0:07

It was ultimately a disappointing result for our reserves in their championship opener on Saturday evening, as the visitors claimed a one point victory in dreadful conditions in Portsalon.

Despite the low scoring nature of the contest, it wasn’t a bad game, with both teams bringing plenty of intensity to proceedings. The Gaels will be disappointed with their first half return of three points however, as they saw plenty of possession but were unable to convert their chances. Cloughaneely fired home the game’s big score in the opening period, rifling a shot to the back of the net to give them a cushion at the break.

The visitors always looked dangerous inside, and rattled the crossbar in the second half. From that point on the Gaels played well and clawed their way back into proceedings, with Jonny Nanny being the scorer in chief. The clock beat them however, and the lads were left disappointed at the end as the final whistle blew just moments before a Joshua Mc Ateer effort that sailed over the bar.

The weather had an impact on the quality of the game, but as ever the pitch held up perfectly, which is great credit to our pitch committee and groundsman John Blaney. The lads will face Burt, Naomh Columba and Aodh Ruadh in their next three games, so it’s all to play for.

Finally, our best wishes to Cloughaneely player Blaine Mulligan who picked up a nasty injury during yesterday’s game.

Minor girls defeated in Final

It wasn’t to be for our minor girls on Saturday afternoon as they were defeated by a very strong Naomh Columba side at the Centre of Excellence in Convoy.

The girls gave it their all, and battled until the end but Naomh Columba weren’t to be denied on the day.

Special thanks to the girls for their efforts all season, and everyone involved for their support!
