Cavan 0-18
Derry 1-14
(after extra-time)
A late Jack Trainor point decided a 105-minute thriller (including injury-time) between Cavan and Derry in the first round of the Ulster U17FC at Kingscourt this evening.
In what was a repeat of last year's Ulster MFC final, the sides were level at the end of normal time and at the end of extra-time, so more extra-time - five minutes each way - was needed and Trainor's point in the 87th minute proved the match-winner.
The hosts led by 0-5 to 0-4 at half-time in normal time before Eoghan Hawe scored the only goal from a penalty to propel Derry into a 1-5 to 0-6 lead after 40 minutes. Points from Ryan O'Reilly and Emmet Boylan brought Cavan back onto level terms before Enda Downey and O'Reilly traded points.
A Caoimhin McGovern effort looked to have won it for the Breffni boys, but a late Downey free forced extra-time, 1-9 to 0-12.
Cavan streaked into a 0-16 to 1-9 lead in the first period of extra-time, but the Oak Leafers fought back with scores from Hawe, Sean Kearney and Downey to restore parity once again, 1-13 to 0-16.
But after needing extra-time to overcome Monaghan in the preliminary round last Saturday, the additional 10-minute period of extra-time proved a bridge too far for Derry as Trainor's point settled it.
