St Oliver Plunketts at the Feile
2013 All-Ireland Feile Peil na nOg - Full Weekend Report
A memorable weekend for our Under 14s as Stephen Bradley reaches Skills final and Ennistymon end as Division 4 Runners Up
The 2013 All-Ireland Feile Peil na nOg (Under 14s) got under way on Friday, 28th June, when Greenlough welcomed Ennistymon of County Clare to St Oliver Plunkett at 12.30pm.
Once introductions were made the first match of the competition was soon under way; with Greenlough competing in Division 4 Group C along with Ennistymon, Faughanvale and Ardee (Co. Louth).
FRIDAY 28th JUNE
AI Feile Div 4 Group C - Game 1: Greenlough 1-02 Ennistymon 6-11 (28/06/13)
In the competition's first game Greenlough took on their visitors from County Clare. Despite having the better of the opening exchanges in the first few minutes, Greenlough fell behind by four points within six minutes.
Two points in the tenth minute saw the gap widen, before the game's first goal in the 11th minute. Two further points in the twelfth minute increased the lead to double figures, despite Greenlough's best efforts. With five minutes of the opening half remaining Ennistymon still had to time to add to their tally with a second goal and a further point.
Half-Time: Greenlough 0-00 Ennistymon 2-09
Ennistymon made the perfect start to the second half with a goal in just thirty seconds, but Greenlough responded immediately with a well worked team goal finished off by Joe McErlean. Unfortunately for the young St Oliver Plunkett's, two goals in just over a minute killed off any chance of revival.
Greenlough however didn't give up and continued to battle on, finding a point from a free from Kevin Mullan and one from play from Stephen Bradley. Despite their best efforts Greenlough were unable to keep Ennistymon from scoring again and the County Clare boys added a goal and two points before the final whistle; getting their hunt for a Feile title off to a great start while Greenlough will now have to win both their remaining group games on Saturday and rely on other results if they have any hope of progressing to the semi-finals.
Full-Time: Greenlough 1-02 Ennistymon 6-11
Team and Scorers: Brian Henry, Ryan Carey, Shea McDonnell, Peter McDonnell, Martin McPeake, Connor Mullan, Cathaoir Heaney, Jack McCann, Sean Kinoulty, Zak Lynn, Christopher Lynn, James Henry, Caolan Tohill, Stephen Bradley 0-1, Kevin Mullan 0-1 (1f). Subs: Ruairi Henry for C Heaney (14 min), Joe McErlean 1-0 for C Lynn (17 min), Shane O'Neill for Z Lynn (21 min), Michael McDonnell for J McCann (30 min), Patrick McPeake for K Mullan (35 min), Donal Lynn for P McDonnell (35 min).
Following the match the players from both teams were provided with a meal, thanks to catering from Arbutus of Kilrea; before the teams made their way to Derry City for the Feile Parade. Starting at Celtic Park the route took the teams through the Bogside, though the ancient city walls of Derry, to the Guildhall where Captain Sean Kinoulty received the Feile Pendant on behalf of the team and club, before everyone made their way back along Strand Road and to Magee University where they boarded their coaches and made their journey back to Greenlough, where the host families were waiting to take their guests and Greenlough players home for the night ahead of the resumption of action on Saturday, with group games in Faughanvale.
SATURDAY 29th JUNE
Saturday saw Greenlough and Ennistymon travel to Faughanvale to take on the hosts and their visitors Ardee of County Louth in the remaining Division 2 Group C games.
AI Feile Div 4 Group C - Game 2: Faughanvale 1-05 Ennistymon 8-10 (Co Clare) (29/06/13)
Ennistymon proved just too strong for the host club to keep the Clare club's hopes alive of a semi-final spot.
AI Feile Div 4 Group C - Game 2: Greenlough 0-03 Ardee (Co Louth) 8-10 (29/06/13)
Despite Greenlough suffering defeat in their first group game on Friday, they could still qualify for the semi-finals if they beat the other two teams in their group and Ennistymon suffered defeat. However it came clear early on that there was a gulf of difference between the other sides in Greenlough's division when they took on Ardee of County Louth.
Despite starting brightly as they did against Ennistymon, Greenlough conceded early on with 3 points in the opening 4 minutes. The Louth side recorded their first goal in the 7th minute when a '45 dropped short into the net. Two points in the eighth minute so the gap increase further. Greenlough had a chance to close the gap in the 12th minute, but Stephen Bradley's penalty was saved. St Oliver Plunkett's did manage their first score of the game a minute later when the diminutive Caolan Tohill pointed from a free.
Ardee however lifted it another gear and hit a further two goals and two points in the final five minutes of the half.
Half-Time: Greenlough 0-01 Ardee 3-07
Five second half goals in just over ten minutes coupled with three points saw Ardee pull away further in the second period, with a second pointed free from Caolan Tohill and one from Stephen Bradley Greenlough's only consolation for a battling second half display.
Full-Time: Greenlough 0-03 Ardee 8-10
Team and Scorers: Kevin Mullan, Ryan Carey, Shea McDonnell, Peter McDonnell, Martin McPeake, Zak Lynn, Joe McErlean, Sean Kinoulty, Stephen Bradley 0-1, Caolan Tohill 0-2 (2f), Connor Mullan, Michael McDonnell, James Henry, Christopher Lynn, Jack McCann. Subs: Cathaoir Heaney for J McCann (26 min), Shane O'Neill for J Henry (26 min), Ronan Lynn for C Lynn (28 min), Ruairi Henry for R Carey (28 min), Donal Lynn for Z Lynn (30 min), Brian Henry, Patrick McPeake.
AI Feile Div 4 Group C: Skills Test
Stephen Bradley represented Greenlough in the Féile Skills Test at Faughanvale on Saturday. Having completed the different stations in the fastest time, he also managed to be accurate enough to ensure 1st place and a place in the Division final later on Saturday.
1st Stephen Bradley (Greenlough) - 73 points; 2nd Killian Scott (Ardee) - 65 points; 3rd Ross O'Doherty (Ennistymon) - 59 points; 4th Thomas Bradley (Faughanvale) - 50 points
AI Feile Div 4 Group C - Game 3: Faughanvale 4-07 Greenlough 0-00 (29/06/13)
In Greenlough's second group game of the day, and final of the competition, the St Oliver Plunkett's boys took on hosts Faughanvale.
Despite battling very hard, especially in the second half, Greenlough were unable to register any score in either half, but restricted to Faughanvale to only three scores in the second twenty minute period; Brian Henry producing a number of good saves.
Half-Time: Faughanvale 3-05 Greenlough 0-00 Full-Time: Faughanvale 4-07 Greenlough 0-00
Team: Brian Henry, Ruairi Henry, Zak Lynn, Cathaoir Heaney, Martin McPeake, Donal Lynn, Connor Mullan, Stephen Bradley, Sean Kinoulty, Caolan Tohill, Shea McDonnell, Joe McErlean, Kevin Mullan, Shane O'Neill, Ronan Lynn. Subs: Michael McDonnell for Z Lynn (HT), Christopher Lynn for S O'Neill (29 min), Patrick McPeake for R Lynn (30 min), James Henry for K Mullan (34 min).
With the Faughanvale defeat, Greenlough exited the All-Ireland Féile without a win; while the winners of the final game, between Ardee and Ennistymon would top the group and reach the semi-finals.
AI Feile Div 4 Group C - Game 3: Ennistymon (Co Clare) 3-04 Ardee (Co Louth) 2-04 (29/06/13)
There was very little between the two side early on, with Ardee taking the lead with two points, only for Ennistymon to hit back with a goal. However just before half time Ardee fired in a goal of their own to lead by two at the break.
Half-Time: Ennistymon 1-02 Ardee 1-04
The second half saw the Clare boys take control with two goals and two points pulling them away from their Louth opponents. A late surge from Ardee however left Ennistymon sweating as the gap was cut to just three shortly before the final whistle; but it was too little, too late as Ennistymon held on for victory and a place in the Division 4 semi-finals.
AI Feile Div 4 Semi-Final 1: South London 7-12 St Loman's (Westmeath) 2-02 (29/06/13)
In the first semi-final the game was even enough for long periods of the opening period, but with South London getting four of the six goals in the first twenty minutes, the gap was up to ten at half time; 4-06 to 2-02. The second half saw the powerful London side pull further away as each minute passed; as St Loman's failed to register a score in the second half.
AI Feile Div 4 Final: Skills Test
Having qualified from his group, Stephen Bradley took on the other three group winners in Division 4. Unfortunately he was unable to reproduce his earlier performance, and the title went to a player from Burt, County Donegal.
1st Burt Player - 93 points; 2nd Doire Trasna Player - 69 points; 3rd Slaughtmanus Player- 60 points; 4th Stephen Bradley (Greenlough) - 45 points
AI Feile Div 4 Semi-Final 2: Ennistymon (Co Clare) 3-11 Burt (Co Donegal) 3-04 (29/06/13)
Greenlough's visiting club Ennistymon seemed to be always in control of the second Division 4 semi-final. Despite a slow start in the opening half, and with two key players injured in the final group game, the Co Clare boys had a double figure gap between them and their opponents by the half-time whistle; 2-08 to 0-01.
The second half saw Ennistymon remain out in front, managing a third goal early in the half. Burt did battle back and managed three goals of their own. However they all came too late, as Ennistymon's lead proved just too great to pull back as time ran out.
Presentation
Following the semi-final both Greenlough and Ennistymon players, management and supporters made their way back to St Oliver Plunkett Park, where they were treated to a well earned dinner. After the refreshments Greenlough chairman Paul Bradley made a speech thanking Ennistymon for coming to the club and wished them well in the final, before he presented with a commemorative plaque from members of the Ennistymon club, to thank Greenlough for hosting their players and extending a warm welcome and hospitality to their supporters.
SUNDAY 30th JUNE
AI Feile Div 4 Final: Ennistymon (Co Clare) 1-00 v South London 2-10 (30/06/13)
Ennistymon took on South London in the Division 4 final at Owenbeg on Sunday morning, hoping to get over the final hurdle and claim the All-Ireland title. A large number of Greenlough supporters, and host families travelled to Dungiven to support the boys who had stayed with them over the weekend.
Having watched the South London boys the night before in their Semi-Final win over St Loman's of Westmeath, Ennistymon knew they would need a big performance to defeat their English rivals.
Despite a strong breeze in their favour in the first half, and battling hard, Ennistymon failed to score for the first twenty minute period; while South London managed 2-05.
The second half saw Ennistymon make a great start with a goal after just two minutes of the restart, but four pointed frees and one from play by South London saw the English boys win by 13.
Hard Luck to Ennistymon in their final defeat; they put in a great effort and can be very proud of themselves for their displays over the weekend.
Thanks
A big thanks to all those who took part in any way over the weekend. After months of planning the big weekend arrived and passed so quickly. Special thanks to those families in the parish who kindly opened their homes and hosted the Ennistymon players on Friday and Saturday night, travelled to Faughanvale on Saturday for the group games and then went to Owenbeg to support Ennistymon in the Division 4 final on Sunday morning.
Thanks to our Under 14 players for their efforts over the weekend and to our managers Michael Shaw and Harry Tohill for their hard work and commitment during the weekend and dedication over the season preparing for the event. Thanks also to our Feile Officer Sean Mullan for his work liaising with the Ennistymon team and organising of events for the weekend, and to him and Brian Heaney for their assistance at the group games on Saturday.
With Greenlough's second and possibly last involvement in Féile Peil na nÓg for quite some time at an end; hopefully our Under 14 players and those players from the visiting Ennistymon team, as well as their parents, managers and supporters will have experienced some great times over the weekend and created some enjoyable memories; while also forming some life-long friendships.
Well done to all those involved. And thanks to those who put in the effort to make the weekend a success.
U14 League: Greenlough 1-05 Glen 10-10 (25/06/13) - Home league defeat for Under 14s ahead of Feile
Greenlough hosted Glen in the Under 14 B league on Tuesday evening, 25th June.
Despite an early goal by Shane O'Neill and points from Zak Lynn and then Stephen Bradley, Glen proved too strong as they found the back of the net on seven occasions.
Half-Time: Greenlough 1-02 Glen 7-05
Greenlough started the second half brightly with the first two scores, both from Stephen Bradley, the first a '45 the second from a free. However Glen hit back with a goal three minutes later, and a further goal four minutes after that to stop Greenlough's momentum.
The young St Oliver Plunkett's boys battled on to the end, but onlye had a further Stephen Bradley point as Glen added a further goal and five points.
