All-Ireland champions Glen came through an almighty scare to see off Lavey late on (1-11 to 0-13) and advance to the Derry senior football championship semi-finals.
An upset looked to be on the cards in Owenbeg after Lavey moved into a one-point lead with two minutes left in normal time, but the holders were able to level it before Conleth McGuckian landed the winner deep in injury-time.
Ethan Doherty’s goal late in the first-half was what saw Malachy O’Rourke’s men lead at half-time (1-3 to 0-4). However, the underdogs battled into the second-half to level up the tie and, after Emmet Bradley and Niall Toner swapped points, it was the runners up in 2018 that moved in front.
Demonstrating the grit of champions, Glen fired over the last two scores in the added minutes to become the first side to progress through to the last four of this year’s John McLaughlin Cup race and keep their title hopes alive in the process.
