Replying To crafty:  "Wonderful news for Galway, Mayo, Sligo and Leitrim. Can't believe Burke got the job. Was nobody else interested?"
Very ignorant comment. He is a highly respected coach and manager and his record for such a young man is very impressive. This could turn out to be a very shrewd appointment by Roscommon.

Replying To Fighting-Cocks69:  "In 2019, Milltown, Ballymore, Tang, and Maryland were combined into one team. It was an insane amalgamation, and it's baffling how the county board allowed it."
The bitterness from some here is off the wall. You'd know very few have any input in underage coaching or administration and no doubt are from town clubs where lack of numbers is the furthest thing from a problem to them. What was insane about that amalgamation. Milltown and Ballymore are already joined and have been for years as Millmore Gaels and Maryland/Tang have been amalgamated underage for over 30 years. Just because they are the formation of two senior clubs doesn't mean they struggle any less for numbers at underage than if they were stand alone. Maryland/Tang and Millmore Gaels are neighbouring each other so what's the problem with them amalgamating to ensure football for young lads. That year they so happened to have a group of talented footballers and won a championship. It could very easily happen they get together and have a less talented group that don't win but at least lads are getting football. The bottom line is the county board put in the rule in the planning report at the start of the year about clubs with two teams have to play at the same time. They broke this rule with the under 16 championship debacle and lost out in their appeal so now they have to enforce it. Fairness is entitled to all teams and Maryland/Tang are no different. Young lads aren't been deprived football like has been suggested. If a team enters two teams it is on the premise they have more than enough numbers to field two teams and this should not be an issue when this arises. And there is no case Maryland/Tang are only doing this to get at the county board as has been immaturely stated here too. Some keyboard warriors here need to take a good look at themselves before posting scurrilous rubbish without knowing full facts.

Replying To iarmhi_an_mhaith:  "An all time rant from Frank Mescall last night on the house draw live stream. Blame put on clubs for not selling tickets and individuals for not buying them. Accusing people of having a "million excuses of what we are doing wrong". Perhaps they could have listened to the people and taken feedback on why the tickets weren't selling. He says they will get the buy in from the clubs "by hook or by crook". Some way of talking about all of the volunteers from the clubs around the county, everyone is trying to keep their own club afloat. Reckons for once that we have "surpassed the Rossies" in regards to the amount raised (they raised 300k from most recent draw). There was surely an opportunity to get some advice from our Shannonside neighbours as they have great expertise in running these sorts of events. It's not difficult to imagine why people were slow to drop 100 euro per ticket for this draw. There is a cost of living crisis not to mention a housing crisis. A house in Ireland would have been a better prize IMO, and there could have been more prizes on offer if you're asking people to give up that sum of money. I appreciate that it is all volunteers who were running the draw, but the whole situation, including absolving themselves of blame and putting it all on the clubs, seems amateurishly done."
He took the gloss off any good will on the night with his remarks and the way he went about saying them. He seemed to take any criticism that went towards the county board leading up to this very personal and was very emotional in how he portrayed his frustrations. He was always very quick to blame clubs but you would have to question a lot of the decision making at county board level in relation to this draw, the planned centre of excellence itself and a lot of other issues in general. The draw itself selling the tickets it did was successful considering the poor uptake early on. There was a massive push in the last week or so and getting the likes of Conor Moore and Jarlath Burns to help promote should have been done a lot earlier. Even the videos with various players promoting it were in the last month or so after they announced the draw date being pushed back. The only promotional video for months was the one with the chairman on the beach in Spain and it had a bit of a Kilinascully feel to it. Niall Horan, Michael O'Leary, Robbie Henshaw & Bressie are some very well known international figures I'm sure wouldn't have minded doing promotional videos. Even our former players, managers (ie, 2004 era) that would be well known both locally and nationally. Were they even asked? I think the promotional company didn't cover themselves in glory and the chairman even had a dig at them in his rant. You see the one Armagh are advertising and there is a lot more effort put into promoting it with their various videos and interviews with relatable people that may entice people to buy tickets. I think with all the criticism going around it shows Westmeath people do care about our games given the money raised. Sure, more could be raised considering the population out there but I think this should be an eye opener for certain members of the county board how they involve our clubs and treat them going forward.

Replying To 2maroonjerseys:  "No bitterness, it's the only underage team in lilliput that has those numbers, I can list off the numbers for the teams underneath while I'm at it for ya but I'm not going to. I'm well aware of the town teams having huge numbers to pick from. That problem arises with no parish rule or boundaries enforced. Parents keeping a link to their club rather than the one they're nearest to now. It'll go the way of the four town clubs lomans, shamrocks, downs and shandonagh hoovering up and fighting over young lads to play for them. The size of the lilliput panel is an outlier to the rest of the teams. I know of parents cribbing about their kids missing out on coaching at the bigger clubs because the cream gets the attention. Drive the 10/15 mins out to us and you'll get coaching and game time instead of kids dropping out at 12/13 they might stick with it. All this fiasco will do is create the headache it's caused already and the weekend finals are the culmination of it. We're here trying to unearth future senior club and county players. This will cause a few to say f this and walk away from football. Common sense rather than oneupmanship has to prevail, shortsighted decisions have massive implications only 3/4/5 years down the line."
What oneupmanship? Ye would have been fully aware from the planning report of the rules when entering a second team in the competition. I commend Lilliput in being able to field two teams and having a team of the calibre to qualify for a Division 1 final. Obviously a lot of good work is going on there to be able to call on those numbers but when you start blaming other clubs who are doing the best for their players for you not being able to play players in both matches is a bit rich for a club who wouldn't have been as flush with those numbers until recently. It's a bit dramatic to say this will cause under 14s to walk away from football. If anything you would imagine every player within the club in that age group getting football between both teams would be a bigger influence on them not wanting to walk away. Trying to unearth future club and county stars as you say is making sure every kid plays as long as possible. The lad that is on the second team at under 14 could be one of the main players on a senior team but that won't happen if he is dropped for a lad that comes back to the second team after he is finished with the first team. That is the logic behind the rule in the first place and it is to protect the integrity of the competitions for the teams who are struggling in Division 6. By the way your earlier comment stating it was real classy by Maryland Tang and they would would get no luck by it sounds fairly bitter to me.

Replying To A_Chairde:  "I didnt see any blueprint from Tang really, they just dropped everyone and let Kinnegad have the ball until they made a mistake. The goal was Tangs only score from play."
So that was their "blueprint ". You didn't see a "blueprint " but then described one. Kinnegad scored three out of their six from play and Tang scored a goal from play. Both teams only had six scores a piece so I don't see the relevance of pointing out Tangs goal was their only from play. The conditions were awful. It never stopped raining throughout the match.

Replying To The_Fridge:  "Should have retired years ago"
Exactly. What has he brought to the equation for the last ten years for Laois. It is all well be good being there and getting personal records by coming on for ten minutes a game but that isn't much use to the Laois senior team. It doesn't install much confidence on young lads trying to break through every year and seeing a place being taken by a lad that should have retired a long time ago. Seeing him come on today I got the impression a lot of Laois people would feel the same.

Replying To Cusack25:  "It's as simple as this people from the south off the county have no interest in following Westmeath imagine the uproar if the centre off excellence was proposed to be built in Athlone!"
Not true. Athlone has a university with some of the best sporting facilities around that the county board has no interest in utilising and never has. If it was based in Mullingar you'd be sure it would be used more. Counties like Carlow and Sligo are able to go into partnership with their universities but because ours isn't deemed suitable as it is in the wrong town.

Some great point kicking in that second half from Cavan. They were far the hungrier team in the second half. All the good work done by Malachy O'Rourke the last few years set back by Banty's negative ways.

A very poor decision. The forum's are what keep the site going because the articles definitely aren't. It's a pity because a lot of people in counties like a good chat about club football and it was the only platform for many to talk about these matters. The fact you have kept two counties forums shows that you aren't against the concept but by keeping these two and disregarding the rest shows terrible bias on Hogan Stands part.

He kicked at least three kickouts straight to Westmeath men in the first half alone and was at fault for the second goal.

We really had the winning of that match. Even with the concession of those two goals we were the more dominant team. We limited Kildare to 5 scores in that second half but unfortunately for us two of them were goals. The decision making and shot selection of some players was very disappointing.

It's only three years since he left Laois. He stepped down there after we hammered them in a Leinster Championship match. He took over Laois in a fairly good place from John Sugrue who led them to two successive promotions and a Leinster Final and were on an upward trajectory before he stepped down to take the Kerry u20 job. Quirke led them back down to Division 4 where they have been since this years promotion and big championship defeats. I wouldn't go near him.

It makes sense to consolidate it. And not have fifty million threads on one county forum with maybe five posts in a thread. It will flow better. But then you'll have the eternal battle between hurling and football posters in that thread I suppose, in that case name it Cork Football and have another thread Cork hurling/camogie etc"
Rubbish. There are plenty of separate topics to be talking about within a county not just generically "football" & "hurling". On the Westmeath page there were active threads on each different grade championship that was going on. Putting them all on one thread is ridiculous.

Replying To overdabar:  "Well we all know the soloution. In fairness the county board have got the ball rolling with getting land in Mullingar for a training centre. All gaels in Westmeath need to get behind the fundraising drive to get the job done. I do think its hampering our progress in both codes being more or less homeless. When you see the likes of Dunganny in Meath, Kilcormack in Offaly. Underage/ Senior teams need somewhere to inspire them. As for support, I think many turned away a bit from football because it became a very boring watch. Im going to make my return to support the footballers.( from a hurling area). The new rules have definitley made it a better watch Still more tweaks needed."
A lot of people around the county and especially those involved in clubs are finding it hard to row in on this. Firstly, the location of the proposed centre of excellence without massive consultation from the clubs and then the way it was voted through last year has left many people sour. The new centre of excellence nestled between the grounds of both Mullingar town clubs and when completed will practically be an extension of Lomans. The county board launched an initiative recently to promote games in Athlone but I will guarantee that no matter how hard you try, kids and parents from Athlone won't have much interest in going to Mullingar for all training with county teams. The county board is very Mullingar driven and that doesn't sit well with a lot of people in the south of the county. I'm sure a more rural site could have been sourced to suit all and at a lesser price. The way it is been driven and ultimatums to clubs who don't sell certain amounts tickets and threats of future levies on clubs who are doing their best to run their own clubs doesn''t exactly excite people into getting on board. I see clubs promoting the tickets on their social media platforms but get no recognition towards club sales. In this day and age most people will buy online so clubs despite promoting it and helping with ticket sales are still expected to sell more physical tickets.

Exactly. The appeal wouldn't have been successful if the appealing club didn't have a valid case. The offending club knew the rules and are the only ones to blame here.
