Replying To westmeathgaa11:  "I'd like to be a fly on the wall at the next county board meeting with club representatives if the performances of the seniors are discussed. I'd imagine there will be quite some "well I hate to say I told you so" The club delegates seem justified in their criticism of the appointment. Perhaps the board should listen to the hurling men in this county who know hurling. Should voting on football & hurling mgmt teams be restricted to delegates who have a club in that specific code going forward?"
Definitely, I think only hurling club delegates should have a say on who is made manager. The few hurling clubs who were opposed to this appointment have been proven right in the end. Hopefully the minors can keep driving it on now, they didn't play their best hurling, minus captain Dillon Burke and some of the top players having an quiet day they still had enough to get past Offaly yesterday and as a poster previously said the quality of some of our forwards to just be able to switch it on in moments has been matching winning . We just need to get as close to a 60/65 minute performance as we can get going forward now. Conor Williams by his own standards was quiet yesterday yet contributed brilliantly from placed balls including a rocket of a goal. I was impressed with Cian Fleming at centre back, big presence, Ted Aherne at full back did well on Offaly's main man Fletcher. McCauley and McKeogh were very good especially with the driving runs through the Offaly defence and Padraig Monaghan at full forward was excellent. Finn Higgins has to start next weekend too. 4 wins from 4 and going into the game at home against Carlow next weekend with confidence, hopefully supporters come out and get behind them as they might give us something to shout about despite what's happening at senior level!

Replying To jobber:  "To be fair most of the clubs are now producing intercounty hurlers at underage level.ok still not at the level of the big 3 but now Clan Na Gael and Na Piarsaigh are powerful players with Plunketts,Southern Gaels and Cullion improving. We need St Vincent's,Delvin,Fr Dalton's and Brigid's to up their game"
Midfielder Dean Kelly from the schools final today is from Brigids and he is a big powerful skilful hurler. Great effort by our seniors down in Thurles, final score Tipperary 3-25-2-21 Westmeath. The four u20 lads were excellent. Another great effort to follow on from the Limerick game. We should have zero fear of Antrim and Dublin in Mullingar in the last two games, let's try finish with two wins.

Replying To Jack_Sparrow:  "Very disappointing outcome for Westmeath. On a different note I see they are coaching hurling in Castledaly up to u10s. Now I'm sure it's early days there but it's one for the "Can't be done etc etc" brigade to ponder and maybe rethink. Someone obviously thinks it can be done and are doing it."
Yeah I heard something about them starting a juvenile club but wasn't sure if it was true, heard about another club thinking of doing similar. That's great news and fair play to them, credit where credit is due!

That's a great win over Offaly for our minor hurlers and without Dillon Burke available through injury

Just a word on Joe Fortune, manager's get criticised when things don't go to plan so it's only fair to give the man the praise he deserves, he has been fantastic all year and seems to have a great relationship with the players. Winning 2A with a comprehensive win against Down in Thurles, putting in some super displays of hurling against the top teams in the championship, earning a memorable draw vs Wexford and then the emphatic win over Laois yesterday. He also seems to have a plan in place for all the young players we have coming through, they seem to be working alongside our seniors. I'd imagine a lot of the focus with these lads is on S&C. The players deserve massive credit of course, but Joe and his management team do equally. Hopefully we can see the return of Liam Varley, Shane Clavin, Josh Coll and Gary Greville along with the addition of 2/3 of the younger lads, and I'm convinced we can make further progress next year with this management team.

Well done to CBS Mullingar u14 hurlers on a marvellous win in the Leinster Final over Wexford CBS. Last year's u14s lost the Leinster Final by a point to Enniscorthy! Great to see consistent improvement and success with the small ball in the school, competing and winning at this level. Super work being done, well done to all involved.

The bulk of the Offaly team is KK and they dominate in Offaly. Castletown went toe to toe with them right into injury time and could have won. Despite like I've already mentioned O'Reilly and the players already away. I have to give credit to Lough Lene Gaels who have injected a new lease of life into the Senior championship in Westmeath, there's 4 strong teams that are contenders, improving the standard. Which helps whatever team comes out of the county then into Leinster. I know Fr Daltons went up this year to Senior A but over the next couple of years I reckon Plunketts are going to show themselves as the 5th contender. Great work at underage. Westmeath hurling is in a decent place with plenty to build on. Let's hope Bulfin gets all the top players available into the county set up for the upcoming season.

Aaron Craig has to be considered a liability in these games and not because of his ability. He gets sent off quiet a bit.

Congratulations to Killian Doyle, the first Westmeath hurler to be nominated for an all star since David Kilcoyne. Great achievement for a hugely talented hurler.

Great to see cbs Mullingar competing in Leinster A junior hurling and beating Colaiste Eoin of Dublin 4-19-2-12. As always good work going on in the school.

Replying To stonemadbeany:  "Technically no, but in reality yes"
So they need Plunketts to beat Castletown and you'd imagine with Castletown knowing this they'll make sure to put Plunketts to the sword.

Some of the stuff on here is ridiculous, our team is a homegrown team with the exception of two players who have parents from Westmeath. I dont see any problems at all. A whole lot of whining over nothing.

Replying To jobber:  "hasnt done much for Delvin in senior B hardly likely to figure.Top underage player no doubt but for whatever reason hasnt reached potential, yet?"
That's a bit harsh considering he's been away and then also injured this for a good chunk of this season. He's well capable of turning it on against Fr Daltons in the final and winning it for Delvin. He's still young.

It hasn't been mentioned here yet but well done to St Oliver Plunketts on winning the u15 Division 1 championship, finally a team has broken the dominance held by Clonkill, Castletown and Raharney. Hopefully this is a sign of other clubs coming up to that level now, Plunketts have been doing great work recently.

Replying To preddan:  "great win guys to get a result and not playing that well. i think the team can play alot better than we seen today and hoping we will see it come championship. tbf to laois i thought of the better play they were on top slightly better with teamwork and passing so westmeath grounding out a win like this is mighty. Playing in the stronger side of the division even though the beatings did stand to the team in the end massively. Derek mcnicolas still has a lot to offer, two class points when he came on."
We didn't play that well really, particularly in the first half. We certainly can play far far better than that. Like I previously mentioned, our forwards were excellent and so efficient. Putting up 3-24 with a below par performance definitely bodes well. Laois threw everything at us and even when they drew level the lads didn't panic at all and went straight back down the pitch and stuck the ball in the net. Eoin Keyes is a talent, super off the bench. We all criticised Joe Fortune (including myself) for drafting McNicholas back in, we look a bit silly now. What a classy stickman, two wonderful points from range to seal the deal at the very end.
