tomsmith here I say that the current selection process is flawed and need dramatic surgery before the All star selection process fall into total disrepute . Looking at all the good players from smaller Counties who donr stand a chance of being selected dont not talk about being nominated its a crying shame that these players dont get recognition because the players who play in an Allireland final are away up in the pecking order. The answer is for the selectors to only be able to select two players from any one team. No big deal that fellows who play in All ireland semi-final ect dont get a nomination against the player from division two thee ot four teams. Tell me when a fellow from London ,Carlow , Killkenny was last selected , Ough the current format stinks and I say let the Gaa take this on board

Kilkenny's Huw Lawlor and Martin Keoghan were selected last year.

Personally, I lost interest in the All-Star awards many years ago and I never watch the ceremony. Originally, the awards were devised as a way of rewarding the best footballers and hurlers in their position regardless of how successful your county was. Throughout the years, players such as Kevin O'Brien (Wicklow, Matty Forde (Wexford) and Declan Browne (Tipperary) won All-Star awards. I've never met anybody who would disagree that these three players didn't deserve their All-Star award. If those three players were playing football today, they wouldn't win an All-Star award due to the fact that their county isn't good enough to reach an All-Ireland final. Even counties who win provincial titles only win one award on average. The other farce concerning the awards is that the team who win the All-Ireland are given more awards than the beaten team. The result of one game determines if a player is worth an All-Star. Previously, the merits of a player winning an All-Star was determined across the whole season and that players consistency throughout the season. All players who win an All-Star are exceptional players but I'd argue that there are players who have won awards in recent times who aren't the best players in their position, in the year they were given the award. I think the award criteria should be reviewed and revised as I don't think the current system is fair and discriminates against players who are brilliant individual players but have no chance of winning an All-Star award.

I don't think there's been any major shift in selection strategy, that you speak of. All Ireland winners always won more awards than runnersup, since inception in 1971. I'm fairly sure Offaly won more than Galway that year, and that was year1 selection. There's surely been very few all Ireland champion winning sides since 1971 in either code that didn't claim the highest volume of allstar selections in the year of their success. Also, players of the calibre of Browne and Forde could well win awards in the current era, why couldn't they?

Apart from the 1st year when there were 9 different counties, there were only 4 other years with 8, one being 1972, and this year being the most recent. When Browne won his 1st there were only 5 different counties, and when Forde won his there were 7, 6 when Browne won his second. Since 2011 up until now there have only been 6 different counties represented twice, with 4 or 5 being the norm. So this year was a bit of a throwback year with 8 different counties.

I couldn't care less about the all stars but if those choosing the recipients are making sure that several counties are represented instead of simply choosing who they think the best players are the whole thing becomes pointless altogether.

The social media influencers interviewing the players had no clue. It was cringe. Who let them in?

I think Down as All Ireland champions in 1991 only got four, the same year as the epic Dublin-Meath saga. I would argue that there are very few current players as good as Browne or Forde in their prime apart from Clifford.
