It will be like the old days guaranteed All Ireland Semi Final because the competition in Leinster is so poor Galway could dominate it for the next 10yrs. I couldn't believe how badly Galway played on Sunday,I'm not too worried because Galway can play alot better than they did on Sunday. If Galway had played with the same skill and intent as they had v Cork We definitely would have won on Sunday. They certainly didn't come from nowhere. They might have got there a bit earlier than expected, but that was a very highly touted group coming through. A huge number of them had won U21 All Irelands in 2015 and 2017 and had Fitzgibbon titles with UL and Mary I. The success wasn't out of the blue either, but came from a lot of hard work done underage with development squads and increasing participation rates. The financial support to achieve this was also very important. They got their house in order in a big way and also had a generational group come along. It's not us, because we haven't done the same or had such a group come through. It took what was pretty much a generational team in Galway to win one All-Ireland, combined with having one of the best hurlers to ever play the game. Is it now time to have a serious conversation about making an effort to form some sort of Divisional Cup / League for Hurling and Football in County Galway to allow high achieving club players to play at a higher level but trapped in a Junior, Intermediate or Outside the Top 6 Senior Clubs. Especially considering the restructuring of the Hurling grades this year and the number of footballers from Galway now playing in the Dublin Championship in an attempt to access and retain a greater level. They didnt come from nowhere, they had a big review at grassroots level in 2008, and built from there. They had good structures already in place by the early/mid teens so that when they got 2 generational groups of lads come through 2 years apart they were able to maximise these groups potential. As regards never you, and defining great as a team who reach multiple AIFs and win 2 or more of them, you had a great team in the 80s. We had great teams in the 50s and 60s. Limerick in the 30s and currently. Offaly in the 80s and 90s. Clare in the 90s. Unless you are Cork, Tipp or Kilkenny great teams dont come along very often for anyone. It's the 1st year of our new group IMO, with the oldest of the being 25/26. I'd still have we can have an All-Ireland or 2 in the coming years. I'd doubt we'd reach the peaks of Limerick or Kilkenny etc. Remember it took Limerick 2 or 3 years to get into the groove with Kinnerk.
