Another cliffhanger tonight and just about deserved a 1 point win, primarily based on the first half performance (3-12 to 1-17). Fair play to Galway who came back from being 9 points down at half time and had a long distance kick to nearly win it at the end. Roscommon will learn an awful lot from this performance and their is certainly improvement in them. letsgetgoing (Roscommon) - Posts: 901 - 08/05/2026 21:39:12 2671707 Link 0 |

Sneaky feeling mc geeney, and Joyce have minded their squads for these games? Both have learned a lot over last few seasons.

I would be looking to have fallon or stack on from the start. We need to dominate the middle third from the start and not let them dominate like last year where darcy had a field day. Galway will be looking to create one on one's in the middle third. This game will tell us where we are really in terms of fitness, can we maintain it going down the final stretch.

Congrats to Minor team and Management. Enda Browne absolutely outstanding. I've tried to post about that last free in to Galway that could have beaten us but I've been blocked by the mods here. I still disagree with two points from a free and would like to see that rule changed. endgame (Roscommon) - Posts: 2657 - 09/05/2026 14:42:12 2671779 Link 0 |

Why do you disagree with 2 points from a free? Do you want to reward fouling in the 2 point shooting area?

Funny enough, I posted on it too and it wasn't published. I agree with you on two point frees except in cases where a player attempting a two point kick is fouled. That has to be kept a two point free or else it will reward fouling outside the arc and penalise the good kickers. A good game which should bring both groups on a good bit. Our lads will be disappointed with a couple of the goals in particular, but it was a well deserved win for the Rossies. Good luck in the quarter final. So just foul him early before he's set to shoot... Really??

Another U17 Connacht title for Roscommon and once again went through their provincial campaign unbeaten - a fact that adds further to their achievement - Gaa_lover (USA) - Posts: 3956 - 09/05/2026 16:15:27 2671801 Link 0 |

I'd be happy enough with a change to the rule as suggested by wanpintwin here. I think two points for any free from outside the arc is too easy and is not justified. Two good minor teams and I'm sure Galway are disappointed to lose by a point as we would have been. Roscommon wait now for the Ulster runner up and I think the Ulster minor championship is only at quarter final stage. I agree with the post here that the scheduling in Connacht didn't help Roscommon minors. Having won all our games in the group stage, we had a gap to the Connacht final and Ros may have lost some momentum with that wait for the final.

You didnt answer the question. Do you want to reward fouling outside the 2 point arc especially late in the game? Thats exactly what will happen if you get your wish and a free is only worth 1 point. Why would any team let the opposition work any 2 point shot if a simple foul reduces the risk to 1 point?

It wouldn't be straightforward for ref to decide but, as Tadhg is saying, it's not a good rule if a good 2 point shooter is fouled trying to score from outside the arc and then gets an advantage from the foul by conceding a 1 point free attempt. The attacking team have intent to kick for two points, so the defending team are preventing them getting a two point kicking attempt away. I agree with you if a player is fouled outside the arc if they're not shooting for a 2 pointer, then it should be a 1 point free. But it would need clear definition of the rules and consistent application of the rules from all referees. Not easily done.

That's the exact reason why the FRC wanted frees outside the Arc to be 2 pointers.

Fouls on attacking players. The free Galway had last night was for a Roscommon player taking too long to take his own free. A two point free for that seems extremely harsh. Likewise for fouling the ball, such as over carrying, touching it on the ground etc.

It's never going to be that simple, what if the player is trying to go round the defender to get a 2 point shot chance but is fouled there? What if player is trying to pass to a teammate in a scoring position and fouled? Too many situations where it could be argued they could have had a 2 pt opportunity were they not fouled. systematic (Galway) - Posts: 279 - 09/05/2026 18:02:11 2671828 Link 0 |

Well posted. That sets it out well. As for last night, that should surely have been a throw ball rather than a free in to Galway.

You can't have different levels of frees. A free outside the arc is a 2 pointer if scored. You can't have different layers. eoinog (Sligo) - Posts: 2420 - 09/05/2026 21:42:23 2671870 Link 0 |
