Mayo GAA Thread

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I recall someone on this thread being slated for suggesting Mayo will get a "clipping" from Roscommon, their front 8 were just too strong runners for ye to deal with. Bringing on Cillian O'Connor in 2026 was a sign of how bad Mayo were today.

Reminder to take league form with a pinch of salt.

Replying To tirawleybaron:  "Mayo give up a serious amount of goal chances and Kerry and Donegal exposed that.

Last year we complained we were too defensive as the game plan was designed to limit goal chances.
Now the game plan is based around booting it forward and the half backline pushing on in support. Such a stratedy gets exposed if the ball is turned over with the half back line pulled forward.
There is more that can be done on "help defence" but that needs instinctive defenders. We are not playing natural full back line players in the full back line, so they are learning those instincts from scratch at intercounty level. Not a good place to be."
Who would have guessed that starting a championship match with 8 players playing out of position would result in a hammering from a team who knew exactly what they were doing.

It really is hard to make any plans for or sense of Mayo anymore. The first half when Mayo went out in front and let Ros back into it told us that they were not going to put them away and after the Ros goal they knew they could keep within touching distance of them. Mayo are just so unpredictable and collapses are too frequent and a favourites tag in the championship has never served them well. They will most likely go on to take a big scalp in the championship when there is no pressure on them but today was not a good day for Mayo football.

Mayo defenders bar Callinan are all poor. Our captain is in shocking form and Enda Hession simply can not defend. Our goalkeeper not for the first time had a meltdown. Brining on Cillian smacked of desperation.

While Andy spoke well after the defeat, one thing I can't buy into is his insistence that this is a 3 year plan, if so why bring back Cillian and Rob Hennelly? Surely youth is the way forward.
Roscommon are on year one also and have given youth a chance.

Defenders are poor - fully accept that. Moving McBrien back and bringing in Coen might shore things up for the next day.

But on yesterday - the second half was more or less Hennelly kicking it out to midfield, and the ball coming straight back at them because we couldn't get a hand in at midfield. Why were we so bad there? Where was the likes of Flynn and Carney to pick up on breaking balls.

And to change it we bring on COC? As you say desperation. it made Andy look clueless on the sideline - and maybe he is.

Hennelly has always been hit and miss. And has no presence at all. Any high ball that ever goes in he lacks confidence. Brickenden is ok at times but never a full back. The McBrien thing is puzzling. 6 or 3 is where he should be. Tuohy not bringing much either. And Carney is so frustrating to watch. We are soft. No bite. There is still a decent top 6 team there but changes need to be made and a big reaction needed.

Mayo's full back got cleaned but it took 45min to make a change.
Mayo's center back got exposed but should have been moved forward.
Midfield was a disaster but no change to the kickout strategy at all.
Took off the corner forward, full forward and a centre back only to put on two corner forwards and a wingforward.

Normally, if your being beaten at midfield, centre back and full back, you put in players who can play those positions.

Changing corner forwards wont help you win ball at midfield. We had 2 starting and 4 more on the bench - has no one told Moran that there are only 2 corners forward positions.

Fenton Kelly - wingback
Donnacha McHugh - FB
Stephen Coen - halfback
Michael Plunkett - half back
Matthew Ruane - running midfielder
Paul Towey - corner forward
Fergal Boland - half forward
Darragh Beirne - corner forward
Tommy Conroy - corner forward
Cillian O'Connor - corner forward
