Great result for Bosco and the lads. Let's hope they can keep this up and get Wicklow hurling back to where it belongs. Freethinker (Wicklow) - Posts: 1351 - 26/01/2025 15:34:42 2587691 Link 0 |
Great win for Bosco and the lads on the road. Nice few experience lads with plenty of hurling back on the team but also no sign of one or two other lads that you'd like to be seeing that would make a massive difference at this level. I wouldn't get too excited men ,that's as bad as sligo team they v had in a lonnng time ,the lad at right hb wouldn't get on a wicklow junior team and he wasn't the only one ,but good result for ye on the road ,sligo are going down barring a mircle, alot lads have opted out with the new man that came n last year and the cb stayed with him ....happy to see a downward curve .... Considering the fact that our manager and a lot of the panel just abandoned the hurling squad before 2024 league, we are not doing to bad now. sponger (Wicklow) - Posts: 2915 - 26/01/2025 20:14:43 2587771 Link 0 |

When you follow hurling and football there is absolutely that you get carried away by anything Timmy. It's good to get an opposing viewpoint though.

We know all about this situation ourselves Timmy and it's not a nice place to be. For the last couple of years we've had a similar scenario where you could easily pick another whole panel of hurlers who, for one reason or another, have not been involved. We are only starting to come out the far side of that now.

Couple of opinions from me on the new rules having watched a few games at weekend: Hawkeye2 (Wicklow) - Posts: 150 - 27/01/2025 20:22:03 2588051 Link 0 |
Keeper should not be allowed outside the 20 meter line, and only extended to the 13 meter D for kick outs only as his momentum will carry him into the D for kick outs. Must retreat back inside the 20 meter line as soon as the kick is taken. They can still come up the field to take a free or 45 but again, must retreat back inside the 20 meter line straight after the dead ball is taken and cannot become involved with play. Free to the opposition against the keeper on his 20 meter line otherwise

That was one of the criticisms levelled at the new rules over the weekend. I couldn't figure how keepers are allowed to still go outfield to take part.

Was some kind of record set last night in the Sigerson q/f ?? 4 or maybe more Wicklow players involved ? Freethinker (Wicklow) - Posts: 1351 - 29/01/2025 12:38:54 2588340 Link 0 |
I think it's going to come under big pressure to be changed. It makes a mockery of the 3v3 inside rule if the goal keeper can just run out past these 6 players and get involved as an extra man at the far end. You'd be as well playing with no goal keeper and selecting one of your better play makers as goal keeper to come out and dictate the play in the other half.

I'd imagine that the rule regarding the goalkeeper being allowed to join in, in the attacking half of the field will be reviewed. It doesn't make sense that a goalkeeper can join the attack and created an extra player while three outfield players have to remain the defensive half of the field. I may be old-fashioned but a goalkeeper should stay in goals. I understand that the game is evolving and that goalkeepers take frees and score more than in the past but I think joining in, in the attack while other players are forced to stay behind makes very little sense. Equally, I think two points being awarded for a free or 45 outside the arc will come under serious consideration. I know under the old rules, both had the same value but a free shot at goals shouldn't be awarded the same value under the new rules, in my opinion. With regard to Wicklow. I'd question why the game in Aughrim was called off on Sunday when games were played in other parts of Ireland which was worst affected by the weather. Wicklow will now begin their division four campaign away to London on Saturday. I wasn't convinced that the announced team for last weekend's game would've started the game against Waterford so it will be interesting to see what team starts against London on Saturday. Having watched a live game under the new rules, a team that can score from outside the arc will thrive. With Mark Jackson not in the starting line up, I'd have thought that Matthew Ging would start as he is a recognised free taker. Maybe that responsibility will fall to Kevin Quinn. I assume that's why Kevin Quinn is named in the half forward line as oppose to full forward. Best of luck to the team on Saturday.

Great to see so many Wicklow lads on the TU Dublin sigerson panel that made it to the semi finals yesterday. thought the two wing backs in fee and prendergast were excellent. Is Conor McGraynor the last Wicklow man to start on a sigerson winning team or is there someone obvious I'm forgetting.. hoping the extra games won't be a strain on on the lads coming into this weekend.

It is a great sign to see Wicklow players are playing sigerson and standing out in the latter stages of this competition. To the best of my knowledge Conor McGraynor was the last player to win the sigerson with DCU. Conor is a player who could have had a great career with Wicklow but it never seem to happen for him for some unknown reason.

Yes 6 players were on the DIT panel for there quarter final win, with 4 starters. Also malachy stone is still in it with UCD and has feature for UCD who are also though to Semis. The DIT game looked a high standard of football even all star Basquel didnt really stand out.

So, 7 altogether still standing. Very good. Has to help these players individually and collectively to be competing at this level.
