Oisin was just back from injury against Derry and he may be starting tomorrow. Anyway Jim is taking it easy with any player coming back from injuries. Hopefully it will be a long season.

You always said we hadn't the players. Jim has proven like I said the players are there but you have to go to matches to find them. The style of play and the fitness levels now are far ahead of the previous manager. If you cannot see that then there is no hope for you? You can set all the targets you want but for the first time since 2012 we can seriously compete with top teams in the country. As I'm saying the standard has dropped big time. The kerry Dublin and mayo are a pale shadow of the teams that dominated for so many years. Nothing but Sam will suffice this year. Stop talking about competing with the top teams'as we seen with kerry tonight' this all Ireland is there for the taking this year- end of story-.

The standard was never lower than in 2020 when Cavan and Tipperary made the AI semi finals. The man in charge that year never got us to a semi final despite 5 attempts. Jim did it in his first year back in 2024.

What would anyone from Monaghan know about the Sam Maguire Cup?
Cockney_Cat (UK) - Posts: 2715 - 20/04/2025 09:00:51 2602963 Link 0 |
Oh yeah no word of the other two who made the semis. The two teams who dominated football for a decade. I'm silly responding to you because I'm getting ready to hit the road for clones. Weather looks good hopefully some of the fair weather fans know how to get to clones. Only joking . Donegal by 6 plus please Donegal prove my opinion on our defence wrong this year- they'll be no happier man than rorys boys. But that wee doubt still comes back to me now and again. Good luck Jim and the boys.

Our game management was poor in second half, overall we were the better team and deserved to win. Referee was very harsh on gallen who was being persistently fouled. Onwards to Down next weekend totalrecall (Leitrim) - Posts: 1041 - 20/04/2025 18:10:36 2603119 Link 2 |
Don't get me wrong, I think paddy mcbrearty will be a key player for us this year, but he was well off it today and conor odonnell who wasn't having the best game himself was working hard and paddy should have got curly finger before him. Very strong performances from mogan, langan , mccole and Thompson, while young roarty was just superb

3 wins and a draw in our last 4 championship meetings with Monaghan...the team that always beats us totalrecall (Leitrim) - Posts: 1041 - 20/04/2025 18:46:57 2603140 Link 1 |
Yes agree, not sure how many times he was fouled and the ref gave him nothing. Can't be blaming Gallen for losing ball when he's fouled and it's ignored. Terrific player who will light up this championship yet. Donegal did a lot right today, don't necessarily agree with those saying we didn't game-manage well.. we led and never surrendered that lead. Monaghan were intelligent in their play but I'm sure Jim will be concerned about conceding 0-21 despite the new rules etc bringing all scores up in games.

There were two at least where I couldn't believe he didn't get the free, the last one I think was very good defending in fairness but the crowd was mad about the previous ones at that point, I was screaming for it myself haha We should have seen the game out with a few minutes to go. Poor game management in my opinion we had to get a shot away when we were holding on to possession there in the last few minutes, even if it went wide we were doing well on Beggan's kickouts. The absolute last thing you do there is a turnover. Needed someone to just step up and take the shot on. We ended up turning it over and Monaghan go up and get the 2 pointer and suddenly it's all to play for very quickly again. Monaghan kept themselves in it with some absolutely brilliant scores. I'm telling you these 2 pointers will be a totally different ball game now as we get to the better weather and better pitches. Lads will be popping them over for fun. I thought Langan really grew into the game, Thompson scored some corkers himself, Roarty what a play we have on our hands I knew Monaghan would give us a hell of a game they always do, I'm not even talking about the 2013 onwards stuff, historically in Ulster we have a very tough time with Monaghan always. So I'm delighted to get out of Clones with the win, some sore bodies there today I would say I hope Ryan is ok after the bad knock he got, and hopefully we get a few more bodies back in for next week and maybe McGee will get the start. Down are very mobile around the middle like ourselves. CCFabu (Donegal) - Posts: 152 - 20/04/2025 19:00:33 2603152 Link 0 |
They were all good in the first half and for parts in second half but Jesus gallen has put himself firmly on the bench again. Dont think he was fouled at all. He was a turnover machine and made poor decisions. Maybe a game against a poorer down side will give him confidence though.

Ulster is a different story totalrecall, all my years following Donegal we've only started beating them in recent years (thank god!)

Big learnings to take from today. I don't know if noticeable on TV but there was a significant breeze that Monaghan had in the second half. The way we defend zonally does leave us susceptible to the two pointers and Monaghan took advantage by going for broke on them in the second half. I think this will be something to ponder for Jim and if you don't take advantage of the conditions when to your advantage a seemingly healthy lead can be erased very quickly especially if a team decides to cut loose. To be fair I thought we showed great character to pull away when Monaghan got it back to one. The ending was certainly dissatisfactory as I like most thought Monaghan had one more opportunity. However I thought overall we were the better team but like already alluded to our game management was very poor. Excellent performances from Mogan and Thommo particularly in the first half. Shane O'Donnell continued his great form as did Ciaran Moore even if his handling let him down a couple of times. The two link up really well and in Moore's defence today wasn't an easy day for ball handling. Great to see Langan back and putting in a big performance and Jason McGee made a difference when he came on. McCole was excellent and McMenamin was very good for someone with limited time. Murphy was Murphy but it wasn't a great day for our inside forwards. Nothing went right for Conor O'Donnell not helped by his decision making. Paddy looked way off. Gallen is struggling for form but in his defence he was constantly getting fouled unfinished when he came on. panamasam (Australia) - Posts: 2846 - 20/04/2025 19:17:29 2603168 Link 0 |
While some of his shooting was poor and a couple of poor turnovers he was definitely fouled on more than one occasion. There was one on the hill side not long after they got a cheap free for what looked like good defending by our lads. It was a nailed on score until he was dragged down and nothing given.
