Looking forward to heading back to Clones Sunday and hoping for better weather than what's out there so far today. Rewinding to nearly two weeks ago and what a day to be in Ballybofey and the hills in general. Hard beat it when the sun is out even with the cold draft. The colour in Ballybofey was incredible mixed with the buzz of anticipation and excitement Jim McGuinness creates. The performance itself was good without being spectacular, perfect in my eyes as kept the lid on the media who were still fawning over Kerry the week before. Derry were much maligned for their performance but I didn't see it that way. They started really well and starved Donegal of possession but didn't make it count on the scoreboard missing some relatively easy scores. Worryingly from a Donegal perspective they got in more than the once and on another day would've rattled the net more than once. Justice was done with the penalty save as it was never a pain. I do worry about any potential future games with Cawley in the middle especially after last year. Back to Derry it was fairly obvious Glass wasn't fit and Shane McGuigan was not on form. Derry will need these lads back to form if they want to turn their year around. The potential is there but I'm not sure the want is. The same cannot be said for Donegal. While not reaching the heights the pace, power and athleticism on display was a sight especially Roarty, Shane O'Donnell and Ciaran Moore. The latter two have come on again from last year. Then when you add Ryan, Mogan and Ban the pace is phenomenal. Daire is having a great year so far but I really hope he carries that form deep into the summer after tailing off last year. I could go into Murph, Paddy, Thompson, Big Hugh etc but it's already been said here

Looking forward to the weekend it's going to be a really good test. Monaghan will be confident especially after their impressive league campaign and final win. Especially good to see Bannigan doing well after being the main man for DCU's Sigerson win a couple of years ago. Brendan and Mark Curran will be all too aware of the threat he poses. I'm sure Jim will have us drilled to avoid cheap fouls outside of the arc given Began's accuracy for 2 pointers and we cannot be so porous around the back as I don't think Monaghan will be as wasteful as Derry in those situations. However I just think Donegal will have too many fires and maybe the jump up from Division 2 might be too much for Monaghan. Donegal are very familiar with Clones at this stage and I'm sure cannot wait to get on the pitch Sunday. As always safe travels to all.

Whilst I respect Monaghan a lot I don't see how they can compete with a much bigger more physical side like Donegal. Monaghan have played no-one this year of note and whilst they have played well, they'll not have faced anything like what they'll face on Sunday. Donegal by 10+ points. (5pts in old money)

Teams announced, Caolan McGonagle out, and Mark Curran also not named in the subs. Neither McGee or Langan to start. I can see two or three changes before throw in.

Will Jeaic McCeallabhui be given a man marking job on Bannigan? Will Hughie drop back into the McGonagle role?

Weird how Jim is not keen on Gallen.

Caolan will be a big miss around the middle third but Lavelle is also out for Monaghan. Definitely can see a few changes before throw in but a strong bench will be vital if this game goes down to the wire

Be interesting to see our fellas up against the favourites for Sam not expecting a win but looking to see how where we're at as we haven't played a decent team all year but if we get a performance would be happy enough for the minute untill we get more players back from injury for the summer hope its a good tussle and looking forward to it

What makes you think Jim isn't keen on Gallen? He won an all star last year playing for Jim. He's had injury problems and needs to be looked after so he is available for the big games later in the year.

Can't see this game going to the wire. Donegal are a team with their eyes on the biggest prize available. Monaghan are miles away from that.

A win would obviously be the best result for yous but I'd say the Monaghan management wouldn't be too fussed if yous got a good game against an All-Ireland contender to see where yous are at for the championship group stages. A lot of people seem to be thinking we'll beat yous handy but if we don't go at it 100% I can definitely see us being turned over.

We had our eyes on the big prize in 2020 and rem what happened? No easy games in Ulster, especially against Monaghan, I'd take a 1 point victory now and on to the next round.

Two games in a row he's not starting him.

Safe travels to all travelling tmw - best of luck to the mgt team and players. Be great to put Monaghan away pretty ruthlessly.

Exciting times - arguably this is a more all round talented squad than 2012.

To think people on here - well 1 imposter in particular - used to claim we didn't have the players is beyond belief.

The real issue is we didn't have the mgr and we know have a genuine at the helm once again. Hopefully the glenties/fintown messiah stays around for a very long time…

Monaghan won't be rolling over to have their tummies tickled on Sunday that's for sure. Caolan mcgonagle and Mark Curran are big losses to us at the outset. We could possibly see Moore dropping back to half backline and perhaps someone like langan starting at wf who would add a big option on our kick out.

Looks like a wet day too, I'm sure Monaghan given their pace would have wanted a dry day too. I'm predicting a close game with hopefully our subs swinging it in last 15.

Come back to me lad when Sam maguire is resting in donegal. I seem to remember that we didn't win anything extra last year .that we already haven't win. Yeah we'll beat monaghan by 5 or 6 tomorrow. My big question down the years is have we the defender s to beat the big teams in croker . With the new rules this is the year we'll know, until then it's all ifs and buts. Hopefully we have but time will tell. Go back now and enjoy your few weeks off school.

I'm in no hole lad. Just stating a few facts which I'm hoped I'm proved wrong in. Rorysboys says Sam maguire or nothing. No stand out teams at the moment my only fear is kerry and the Clifford's, well beat the rest of them. No sitting on the fence with rorysboys.

The days of starting the strongest team are long gone..it's a 20 man game and now with the short season players have to be managed . The aim is to be hitting croke park with out best players fit and available. Gallen will be starting games at the business end of the season.

Favourites with who? All the main bookies have Kerry as favourites for Sam.
