Meath v Wexford

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I would have Menton at wingback , centerback is a position that should be holding the defense , while menton seems to get forward too much , when he ran at the wicklow defence they could not cope and he scored a beautiful point .

1. P.O'Rourke
2. D.Keogan
3. K.Reilly
4. M.Burke / P.Harnan
5. D.Dalton
6. C.King
7. B.Menton
8. C.Gillespie
9. B.Meade
10. P.Byrne
11. G.Reilly
12. E.Wallace
13. P.Gilsenan
14. M.Newman
15. S.Bray / J.Sheridan

Id take Carroll out of Centerforward and drop Reilly in there , Gilsenan can drop back like Wallace did against Wicklow for an extremely pacey half forward line . I think many people would agree with me that Bray is on his last straw , hes too hot and cold .

I dont care until we get Lenihan out of wingback , and when i first seen him i said that i would still rather Mark O'Sullivan in that position but hes gone now .

I would still love to see Chris O'Connor back for cornerback , anyone know his age ?

Harnan i have to say i was impressed with , he doesnt seem to have much balance though but my lord he can drive that ball forward and he made a great block too .

i think the meath v wexford game is on rte and the dublin v kildare game is on tv3, the only other games on the same time as the meath game is maybe a qualifier and going by the draw, none of the games look like it should be on the box...

Davy Dalton is out for the month of June so stop including him so can we please stop including him in teams to be included to play against Wicklow.

For the record here is the team I would imagine could be seen:
1. Paddy O'Rourke
2. Donal Keogan
3. Kevin Reilly
4. Mickey Burke
5. Ciaran Lenihan
6. Bryan Menton
7. Pauric Harnan
8. Brian Meade
9. Conor Gillespie
10. Peadar Byrne
11. Damien Carroll
12. Graham Reilly
13. Eamon Wallace
14. Steven Bray
15. Michael Newman

Peadar Byrne is somebody who I don't believe has got the full 70 minutes in him in Championship football, especially in terms of the tracking back which is involved in the role which he plays.
The pace of Reilly and Wallace is going to be crucial in our hopes to do anything in our games this year as we're now going for speed over power. If Wallace can improve a bit from last weekend which I think he is capable of and Reilly, Bray and Newman play well then we will be capable of racking up a good score.
Our defence will have to be very careful not to give away frees as Ben Brosnan is a very accurate free taker, last years semi against Dublin apart, while Banville and Lyng are both very good forwards.
Adrian Flynn is a very dangerous wing back who needs to be tracked and ideally stopped at source, Peadar is most likely going to be on him and will need to be very alert to his runs forward from deep.

Would try Carroll again(has been injured),he is a good 11,but Bray,Byrne and Sheridan would be good subs for the final 20mins against tired players..

1. P. O'Rourke
2. D. Keoghan
3. K. Reilly
4. C. Young/S. Curran
5. S. Kenny
6. B. Menton
7. P. Harnan
8. C. Gillespie
9. B. Meade
10. P. Byrne
11. D. Carroll
12. G. Reilly
13. E. Wallace
14. S. Bray
15. M. Newman

A few people were leaving Byrne out of their teams, but he did a lot of work off the ball to help the two midfielders last Saturday. No doubt that we'll need him doing that work again against Wexford as our midfielders are not very mobile.
Carroll had a good game in last years semi and is just back off a long injury, so he is picked.
Wallace will play around the half forward area so that frees up space inside, where Bray can be lethal.
Curran or Young are more natural corner backs so one of them are picked.
I was impressed with Harnan and Kenny on Saturday so they start

Stephen Bray is not worth his place on current form.

I agree with most of yous saying that the back line is the main worry but i'd be nearly just as worried about the full forward line. Everything Newman and Bray done from play was way too predictable and i wouldn't see any harm in changing it up for the Wexford game. I would stick big joe in full forward, yes he might lack the pace that MOD is looking for but he gives you options from play and is far from predictable. Maybe I would leave newman in there to give the chap another chance but the last two or 3 years I don't think bray has been upto it, i know hes had injuries and whatever else but when hes on the pitch he just isnt convincing me. Wallace on the other hand gives us options and looks like a threat when he gets on the ball.
The back line just needs stabilizing, bring menton out to center half, id keep king on one wing and give young harnan a start on the other, keoghan got turned very easy once or twice against wicklow but i think if he can stop himself from diving into tackles he will be a very good corner back, leave kevin in there and id bring burke back into the full back line as he is a god man marker. Midfield unchanged as i think meade and gillespie are starting to work well together and understand each other a lot better and the only change id make on the half forward line would be gilsenan for peadar because i think peadar can make a bigger impact in the last 20/30 mins of a game, just don't think he has a full championship match in him!

Right a small bit off topic, but considering I'm from wexford I said I'd bring it up here. I remember playing a few yrs back, colleges football, and remember one individual who was hands and heels above anyone I had ever seen playing at the level. Mark Battersby, and no I don't know him, and am not trying to blow him up or anything. Just seen his name in the paper the other day scoring 4 points for Skryne, was he ever near county standard, or did he ever get a chance? Was listed at 11 but I had seen him play at 6, obviously been shafted to the forwards!!!

Rossytilidie.

Mark Battersby played corner forward for Meath minors winning a Leinster championship in 2008.
A decent club footballer but probably not just inter county standard in my opinion.

Mark Battersby was outstanding in Gormanstown College as a center half back you are right but was converted as a minor to a corner forward where he has been playing since and probably a bit lightweight to play there at senior county level

Just had a look back over the highlights of the Wicklow game and I have to say our defense still looks as vulnerable as it was against Monaghan. Keoghan is having quite a poor year and was totally at sea for that goal. One of the basic responsibilities of being a defender is to always stay goal side of your opponent. That truly was junior stuff. Menton is not and never will be a corner back, he's too big and doesn't have the necessary quick feet, agility and that 5 yard burst of pace to be a corner back. Micky Burke shouldn't have started that game and was clearly not up to the standard. Harnan impressed me when he came on though and looks like a proper all round footballer. I'd start him the next day.

Why do we look so vulnerable every time the ball is kicked direct at us? I don't think our full back line is getting the required cover it should be getting. Caoimhin King, I suspect anyway, will be found out in Croke Park. Intelligent footballer and good club footballer but I don't believe he's fit enough for the modern day center back.

Another thing I noticed too is that we're not turning the ball over enough in defense. Wicklow's midfielder's were walking through our defense with little pressure meeting them until they were 14 yards from the goal. If we are to have any chance against the top teams our work rate out the field has to be very high. Pressure needs to be put on the kickers who are playing the ball into the forward line to disrupt quality ball. If we played Dublin like the way we played against Wicklow their forwards would annihilate us.

I thought our forward play was quite good but I think we need to put a lot of emphasis on defense if we are to stop conceding tame attacks from very mediocre opposition. No disrespect to Wicklow but Kildare, Dublin and even Wexford will punish us if we defend like we did last Saturday.

Agree with just about everything you say in that post.
Cannot understand why it is not Reilly at 3 and Menton at 6 and build the defence around that spine.

I don't know how much opportunity Mark Battersby got with the senior county panel but he miss a lot of time out after a knee injury which needed surgery. Might get another go at county level. Would be nice to have him as a back. It's not like we are short of forwards.
