Replying To AllWhite: "It's a bonkers system in fairness. Don't find out what championship you're playing in until just before it starts. We've had an awful league but it's galling to think that we could be leapfrogged by teams below us based on the luck of a provincial championship draw or a one off game in a province. It's all a bit random." Colm O'Rourke is a great advocate of the TC. He may have a taste of it this year. No guarantee that they would win it but would guarantee them entry to SAM next year.

I have a Club + ticket but no longer live in the county. As all Mayo season tickets are sold out the only way to downgrade to a regular season ticket is to swap with an existing regular season ticket holder. If interested please reply below. Thanks" A long shot but would you like to swap for a Longford season ticket. If so I would take your Club + ticket and pay the balance (My Longford season ticket cost €100.
If interested please contact me.

Replying To Spinx: "We will be no where near top 2.
Christie has come in and ruined what little we had.
Between having his favourites and falling out and dropping some of our best young players, he has destroyed the senior team.
But we also have to blame the county board with destroying our championships, which in turn filters into the county team.
We have lads from Intermediate clubs who in any other county would be Junior or Junior B teams.
We have 3 lads who are from Killashee who could not field a team in the senior championship 2 years ago and last year got relegated to Division 3 of the county league!
We have another lad from a team who in 1 game last year conceded something like 11-19 (yes, eleven goals) in 1 Senior Championship game!!!
The team that beat them that day does not even have 1 player on the panel!!!
We will be lucky to get anything against Waterford or London unfortunately." County football involves a lot of commitment. You are belittling players who have committed to Longford in 2024. While they might not be the top players in the county, they are the best that are available right now. There are reasons why other players have not committed.
Just because a player does not come from a top senior team, that does not negate against them performing at a high level. While their clubs have hit hard times and unfortunately are unable to compete at a high level for one reason or another, if a player from that club is deemed good enough to compete at county level, they should be applauded.
While I understand that the next example is maybe a once off or whatever, Take Fossa in Kerry who were competing at Junior level for years. Nobody ever heard of them and certainly did not compete for honours at Junior level until the Cliffords arrived on the scene and raised the bar in the club. They are two gifted players. If what you are saying with Longford is true, then surely with Kerry's tradition they should not be trawling the Junior ranks for players. (Fossa were junior when they arrived on the scene)
I agree that Christie has brought nothing to the table but we are stuck with him for this season at least. . If these players you are talking about did not answer the call, then we might not be able to field a team at County level. These players deserve credit and also their clubs for neutering their talents

Replying To WmeathWarrior: "Get our man/ your man Peter Foy in as S&C coach with Mickey Quinn. The work he's done with St. Lomans over the past 5 years has been phenomenal." Before we start appointing a dream management team, remember the County board will appoint a cost effective team (hence the last two appointments). The fact that PC walked rather than been pushed gives an indication for the CB thinks about the county senior team. It's a box ticking exercise to compete and no more. Looking at the attendances at the league matches should raise alarm bells, but didn't.
We are a long way behind everyone else in relation to S&C. That unfortunately will not improve any time soon. Get a local person in who will encourage players to commit and start from there.

Replying To tomsmith: "Tomsmith here from County Cavan
Listening to Ireland call on Saturday evening and looking at the 100 % Irish participation in every word of it I wonder if iot was played before Gaa games instead of the National Anthem would it appeal to more people to participate from the wider community. The Gaa is somewhat lost to a large group of people in for instance Nothern IIreland .
It would be worth considering if we were / want to atrack people who have an allegiance to an non EEC Country" I can see where you are coming from.
Maybe play it before all Ulster championship matches or even all matches including National League played in Ulster venues.
In Connacht, Leinster and Leinster, play Ámhráin na bFhiann.
If an Ulster team makes it to a National final in Croke Park, play both the National anthem and ireland's call

A 6+ point defeat in Newry is a given now!! Lads where do we go from here? one of the worst years in recent memory!!" The reason we lost is that Longford did not (& have not) a gameplan. Carlow did. Carlow were able to break at speed when they gain procession. Tore down through the centre of our defence (which everyone did all year). We had no answer.
Who is at fault for this.

After the last fewyears of keeping procession at all cost, they are letting the ball do the work. Early days. I know but they can now be confident going into the league with the bit of momentum.

Withdrawals Sound Death Knell For O'Byrne Cup? - 1 Like(s)
Replying To Pikeman96: "It was run as a straight knock-out up to about ten years ago. The group format where everybody gets (or is supposed to get!) two or three games makes it more useful for preparing for the League and giving new faces or fringe players a run out.
Like somebody else above, it's far preferable to me than just leaving it up to counties to arrange challenge matches between themselves." Back then it was straight knockout with first round losers participating in O'Byrne Cup Shield. This gave veryone at least two matches.
The group phase gives teams 3 matches all played in space of 7-8 days. Bit much at this time of year. If a team loses the first two matches, I can see why they may not travel to play a third meaningless match three days later.
Old format gave teams at least two matches. If they lose the two mattches then if they want additional matches prior to league they can organise a challenge at their convienance

Replying To iluvspuds: "Anyway....on this year's championship. Are the semi final pairings already known?
Is it Mull/Killoe vs Dromard/Clonguish and Ballymahon/Mostrim vs Colmcille/Abbey? Or is there another draw after this round?
If the draw is as above, you'd have to say Abbey are favourites by a bit to get to the final from their side.
Then maybe Mullinalaghta after overcoming Dromard in the other semi." Yes, that is the draw for the semi
St Columba/Emmett Og V Clonguish/Dromard

An encouraging display night. Unlucky not to win or at least get a draw.
Positives the performance of the new comers. Joyce kicked two points when he came on.
After all the talk of retirement, Robbie is back and kicked a fine goal.
Good to see Barry O Farrell and Andrew Farrell back.
A lot of positives to take into league campaign.

Longford Championship 2019 - 1 Like(s)
I believe that next year's championship will be 2 groups of five. In that case the two finalists this year should be separated. Open draw after that.
Format. Top team in each group qualify for semi finals. Second and third team in each group qualify for quarter finals.
A2 Vs B3 & A3 Vs B2.
Teams 4 and 5 in each group play-off for one relegation spot 92 semi-finals and a final)
The above format will mean a competitive championship with perhaps something brewing in final round of group matches.
If we go with the format of top four in each group qualifying for QFs then it will be a joke. In the current format we have 15 group matches to elliminate 3 teams. 50% of the matches are meaningless as one victory guarantees a QF spot. In the 11 team format as is today a total of 26 matches are played (exc replays)
In the proposed format above we have 20 group matches with something possibly at stake going into final round. With 2 quarter finals and two semi finals. we would have a competitive championship
