I was just posting this on the main board when I started to think of real hard men who played club football in Monaghan ... I'm not talking about the softies we have today ... I'm talking about REAL hard men who played club football in Monaghan... ************** Has to be those lads from Scotstown Caufields - Gerard, Michael, Fergus McCarvilles (1) - Martin & Gerry McCarvilles (2) - Seamus & Jack Of course you had the Moyna's and McCruddens if that wasn't enough and you had always a few Sherrys in there too Apparently training was worse than games and rather than having a full time physio they had a full time Dentist. Fergus Caufield even knocked out one Armagh man before the ball was thrown up No wonder Sean McCague once said "There was no such thing as a late tackle ... once it happened the same day as a game" **************************************** Apart from the men listed above you have guys like ..... - Declan Loughman - Martin Slowey - Paddy Kelly - Noel Marron - Francie Doogan ... there's not many others FarneyBoy (Monaghan) - Posts: 151 - 07/12/2008 23:17:48 159007 Link 0 |

Great point Peter ... difference between hard and just dirty .... for example K---- was just dirty Loughie was hard FarneyBoy (Monaghan) - Posts: 151 - 08/12/2008 18:05:53 159552 Link 0 |
The hardest man I ever had the 'pleasure' of being on the same field as was without a doubt Keith Mc Gonnell. He was a real hard nut and probably the toughest since the likes of the Caulfields or Mc Carvilles. Not one for pulling out of a 50-50 ball..... and there was usually only one outcome. Peter the great I agree 100% with your views but I'm sure there is a lot more tougher players out there including Martin Mc Elearney from Drumhowan. jakestevens81 (Monaghan) - Posts: 179 - 09/12/2008 09:35:17 159855 Link 0 |

one of the hardest men I have ever played against is Kevin Hughes from from Latton, not dirty just as hard as nails and can give and take. jakestevens81 (Monaghan) - Posts: 179 - 09/12/2008 16:17:55 160283 Link 0 |

Kevin Hughes is a good choice, I always thought that Emmett Brennan from Blayney was a real hard man. Damien McBride was teak tough! Pj Finaly took no s**t. But Fergus Caulfield has to be the man. The Face (Monaghan) - Posts: 890 - 09/12/2008 21:47:42 160630 Link 0 |
