One of the greatest hurlers of his generation, TJ Reid announced his retirement from inter-county hurling on Friday, bringing the curtain down on an outstanding 20-year career with Kilkenny.
The Ballyhale Shamrocks clubman made his senior debut in 2007 and went on to become one of the most decorated and prolific players in the history of the game.
During his remarkable career, Reid collected seven All-Ireland senior hurling championship medals, 14 Leinster titles and five National Hurling League crowns. He also earned seven All-Star awards and was named 'Hurler of the Year' in 2015.
His contribution was not limited to winning medals, with Reid establishing himself as one of the most feared forwards in the game. He finishes his inter-county career as the leading scorer in senior hurling championship history, with an outstanding tally of 43 goals and 672 points.
Reflecting on his decision to retire, Reid spoke of the pride he felt in representing Kilkenny and the privilege of wearing the county jersey for two decades.
"Walking away from something that's been such a huge part of my life is not easy, but I leave with immense pride and no regrets," said the Kilkenny great.
He added: "When I first wore the Kilkenny jersey in 2007, I never imagined I would still be representing my county two decades later. It has been the greatest privilege of my life."
He also expressed his gratitude to his family, club, teammates, management teams and supporters, acknowledging the people who helped him throughout his journey.
Away from the inter-county stage, Reid enjoyed tremendous success with his club Ballyhale, winning six All-Ireland senior club titles and 13 Kilkenny SHC medals.
Kilkenny GAA Chairman PJ Kenny paid tribute to Reid's outstanding contribution to the county, saying:
“TJ Reid has given extraordinary service to Kilkenny hurling over almost twenty years. His achievements speak for themselves, but it is the manner in which he represented Kilkenny, his commitment to the jersey and the standards he set throughout his career that will leave a lasting impression.
"He has been a wonderful ambassador for Kilkenny GAA and a firm favourite with our supporters, who have enjoyed so many memorable moments thanks to his exceptional talent. On behalf of Kilkenny GAA, I want to sincerely thank TJ for everything he has given to our county.”
"Kilkenny GAA extends its sincere gratitude to TJ for his outstanding service to the county and acknowledges the invaluable support of his family, Shamrocks Ballyhale and all those who have contributed to his remarkable inter-county career.
"We wish TJ and his family every happiness and success in the years ahead.
"Go raibh míle maith agat, TJ."
