Leagues over, now bring on the zzzzz........ - 10 Like(s)
So the leagues are over, we have gone from 3 months of weekly action, with a week or two off here and there, all over the country, in the cold and rain, and by May it is all over. Only to be replaced by a stop-start championship where familiarity breeds repetition breeds borefests, where teams who lose 2 games are done for the summer. So 5-8 matches in Feb-Apr in each code, and only 2 for a good few counties from May-Sept when the conditions are absolutely ideal for supporters and players alike? You really couldn't make it up. What a farce.

Replying To slayer:  "A tad harsh?"
No, they should not be running such stories. Gambling is an epidemic in this country, particularly among younger people.

Davy Fitz - 3 Like(s)
Pantomime villain or not, what happened on Sunday was a terrible example of what is wrong in GAA in terms of attitude to the referee. The decision was wrong, indeed. Tipp got a goal, indeed. But Davy Fitz should not be out on the field roaring at the referee. I found the behaviour humiliating, and the reaction "oh he's passionate" does not float. I am 50000% more passionate about Wexford hurling than he ever will be, should I have ran out at the ref also? If there is one culture which needs to change in GAA, it is this "call the ref what you want" attitude. We will never get better ones until we respect them.

Wexford should be Leinster champions - 3 Like(s)
Just abandon the provincial championships full stop, open it all up, the best competiton by a mile every year is the league, surely it could be tried on a 3 year basis at least? Why the constant opposition to change when it could be good for the game? Easy enough to change it back. Galway have been a very positive addition to Leinster championship, maybe they need to simply rename it?

Player drop out after Minor - 3 Like(s)
Above minor, the fixture setup is a complete farce, lads move on and the GAA becomes irrelevant in their lives. Until the GAA can provide a better product for them, where they can plan a life around training, football, hurling, plan holidays etc, who could blame them for saying f this? The parish is no longer the most important thing in young lads lives, and we need to do everything to retain them, not everything to sicken them about GAA.

Michael Duignan on Sky coverage and the GAA - 3 Like(s)

Replying To KK1926:  "Aging.. How old, there's a big difference between late 60s and 70s and what age mine are, late 80s and early 90s and confined to the house. No old person should have to leave their home or pay extra for a product that belongs to the community not just Croke Park. Many lifelong GAA supporters agree with Duignan's point and feel betrayed by the organisation. It's a disgrace that RTE have agreed an exclusive deal with any foreign channel for the rights of Irish GAA supporters to see their county play. I too stand on the sideline every week coaching youngsters. I am glad to do it. No payment is sought or received. There are thousands like me and thousands more who used to do it but are now too old to be actively involved. The GAA's rewards to these loyal supporters is to ask them to pay a foreign company money to watch some of the youngsters they may have coached in the past. The GAA already get huge support in grant form from the taxpayers of Ireland so there is no reason why the games should not be available to the ordinary taxpayer/citizen.Why should any GAA supported 'have' to get Sky to see a match? What, pay €70 a month to see a few matches? There are men and women the length and breadth of the country, young and old, who played for their clubs and counties, making the GAA possible and now they have to pay to see their county or go to a pub. Thats gratitude for you...GAA style!! And what are the players getting from the whole deal??"
You don't have an entitlement to free GAA into your home, should somebody going to the game get in for free in that case just because they are involved locally with the organisation?

I didn't hear a single analyst say there was anything in it, let alone worse than the De Burca incident! There is no case whatsoever here, the linesman seen what happened with Da Burca, and told the referee based on what he saw. No way Touhy will get a ban here, he was running away from the player and he put his hand back over his head and the players helmet opened. He did not grab the faceguard even. The helmet just opened. Get over it. Move on.

Venue for hurling quarter-finals - 2 Like(s)

Replying To janesboro:  "i believer hurling quarter finals will be thurles double header however i think waterford v wexford should be in kilkenny with clare v galway in limerick (ok i am biased here) --mind you parking and access to thurles is very very good

be interested so see what fans of participating counties think"
Would swell the crowd in kilkenny for Wexford people anyway, that's for sure. Thurles is a cross-country mare of a drive from Wexford!

I think Zulu you might have missed my point, I am as disappointed as anybody after our 2 recent performances. Give it a rest. My only point was that 2 days out it wasn't even been discussed. Louth and Meath is 2 weeks away or something and there is a thread about it....

Made the senior panel, fell out with the manager who didn't like me. 6. Made the senior team, a new manager gave me a chance. 7. Won something. 8. Played in all sorts of conditions, reminisce about 10-15 matches, got sent off against somebody. 9. Retired. 10. Decided to write a book. 11. The end. Most modern GAA players are nothing more than bores and their books are no better.

Tipperary v Limerick - 2 Like(s)
Would like to see Limerick win but think Tipp will have 4-5 points on them. Isnt it a travesty that it takes so long to play so few games? The Munster championship started what 5-6 weeks ago and this weekend we have the 3rd game in the championship? But I also think Limerick are a coming force in hurling and wouldnt be panicking if they are beaten this weekend. That is one hell of a young team and they will need time to develop.

Kilkenny fans booing/ironically cheering frees - 2 Like(s)

Replying To ballydalane:  "To be fair Pinkie, notwithstanding Wexford deserving the win, several neutral posters on here were of the opinion that the ref rode us in Wexford Park. Now, if neutral posters are thinking it, it's hardly surprising if Kilkenny fans are thinking it too."
Wow, I didn't start this thread!! But, while I am here, I do agree, I think the booing is a bit ridiculous! Decisions go for and against teams all the time. I thought the referee on Saturday did well in the circumstances, it was a tough game to referee and he did his best. I don't like the cheering wides, booing, etc either, and my own county were cheering wides against Kilkenny and I hated it. Respect the team, respect your opponent, respect the referee.

Wexford hurlers - 2 Like(s)
Element of surprise is probably gone alright, but replaced with a confidence, gameplan and above all excitement which we've not had in recent years. Isn't it great that we are now starting to be talked about as potential Leinster champions? While I doubt it will happen (I still put Galway and Kilkenny ahead of us and a full Dublin team on par with us), it has really given hurling in the county a huge lift.

Replying To 890202:  "How can someone intentionally rip off a helmet during frantic play when they are looking in the opposite direction and haven't a clue who or what is behind them. It was ridiculous by the Sunday game to even highlight it."
Agree. I think there is enough evidence that there was no intent. How many of us have tried to parry a man behind off us and not really known what the story was? If he had even looked around you could say there was intent.

Replying To LooseCannon:  "Oh believe you me, we have."
Turns out they have! Well done Offaly, I am delighted for them. I know it is first round of the league, but they look fit, committed, and gave Dublin a right hiding! Hurling needs Offaly, but the only caution I would offer is that Dublin have a lot to come back. Still, a tonic for Offaly and I am absolutely delighted for them. Nobody in 1B will underestimate Offaly now, would love to see them upset the apple cart like we did last year!

Replying To Southsham:  "Where is the opposition coming from for Galway to be entered in the Minor & 21 in Leinster?"
As a hurling man and with hurling's best interest at heart, I would welcome Galway and Antrim with open arms into Leinster at all levels.
