Nigel Dunne has praised GAA president Jarlath Burns for his ‘lovely gesture’ following his retirement from Offaly duty.

The 35-year-old Shamrocks sharpshooter brought the curtain down on his 15-year inter-county football career in April, after which he received a hand-written letter from Burns thanking him for his service to the Faithful County and also wishing him well in the future.

The letter, which Dunne shared online, read: “Nigel a chara. On behalf of the GAA, I want to thank you for your outstanding commitment to Offaly football for fifteen seasons.

“Through good years and difficult ones, you stayed loyal, competitive and proud – the mark of a true gael.

“Go raibh míle a maith agat for playing your part in keeping the flame of Offaly football burning and for living the values of our association.

“Wishing you every happiness for Christmas and every success in your next chapter, Jarlath Burns, Uachtarain CLG.”

Dunne, who was part of the Offaly minor management that masterminded a surprise Leinster championship success this year, posted on X: “I am genuinely touched by this, what a lovely gesture by An Uachtarán Cumann Lúthchleas Gael, Jarlath Burns. A real touch of care and class.”
