Roscommon are Nickey Rackard Cup champions after edging neighbours Mayo by 3-16 to 1-21 in a thrilling final at Croke Park this afternoon.
The Rossies goals came from Sean Canning, Benny Mulry and Robbie Fallon and helped mark a first success in this competition for their county in an even decade, having lost the 2022 decider to Tyrone.
Mayo got out to a 0-9 to 0-3 lead after the opening 15 minutes at headquarters, with Shane Boland, Eoin Delaney and Liam Lavin all finding their range early on for Ray Larkin’s side.
However, Roscommon eventually kicked into gear and dwindled their deficit to two ahead of Canning’s rocket putting them in front in the 27th minute and another goal from Mulry would see them go in at the break with a 2-8 to 0-11 advantage.
Boland, Daniel Huane and Jason Coyne sent over points for Mayo that left the minimum between the sides come the 51st minute, but a Jack McGahon points at the other end would be followed up by Fallon’s goal.
Mayo responded with a Delaney goal and looked like getting over the line after points flew over via Boland, Larkin, Delaney and Sean Kenny until the Rossies late surge saw them get it level and land the winner through Mulry in injury-time.
