Offaly defender James Mahon has lost his appeal against the red card he received during last weekend’s Allianz Hurling League defeat to Waterford.
The Kilcormac-Killoughey clubman was sent off during the first-half of the clash with the Deise men in Dungarvan, where the hosts won out by 0-22 to 1-11 to join their opponents in promotion to Division 1A next season.
With many having felt that the red card issued by referee Johnny Murphy to Mahon for his challenge on Waterford’s Gavin Fives was harsh, Offaly were hoping that their corner-back would be cleared to line out in the Division 1B final rematch against their Munster counterparts on Sunday week at Pairc Ui Chaoimh.
However, the Central Hearings Committee (CHC) has upheld Mahon’s red card on appeal last night (Thursday) as it was found that he was “behaving in any way which is dangerous to an opponent”, which means he still stands suspended for the league decider in nine days’ time.

Misses the 1B League final on Sunday week.
With this and the Tynan card upheld, looks unlikely any further ones will be overturned on appeal.
