A native of Southern Station Road, Dermot played GAA in his younger years, but it was his association with basketball that he is most remembered for. Known as 'Mr Basketball' in Athlone, he founded the basketball club in the town in the 1950s and later became an international basketball referee. Dermot was also a long-time member of the Athlone Boat Club.
