James 'Jimmy' Flanagan of Gibbonstown, Rochfortbridge passed away on Thursday, May 12th, 2016 at the age of 89. Well known throughout Westmeath, having worked as an overseer with the County Council for years, the Mullingar native had a massive interest in the GAA and attended intercounty football and hurling games in all four provinces as well as club matches across the county. His brother, Paddy, famously lined out at full back for both St Loman's and the county senior footballers and is regarded as one of Westmeath's greatest ever administrators.. In the '60s and '70s, Jimmy followed Loman's and Raharney - for whom his cousin Jimmy Rooney played. Milltownpass GAA Club was formed in the '80s and Jimmy never missed a game as they rose from junior 'B' ranks to senior. He served as a selector for two years and was renowned as one of the Three Wise Men alongside friends Paddy North and Dinny Cleary. Jimmy's sons Mick and Billy represented Milltownpass, while his grandson Shane was on the Westmeath senior football panel in 2016. Another, grandson, James Maxwell, represented the Lake County minor footballers at wing back in 2016.
