Former Lough Lene Gaels hurler Maurice Gavigan, Martinstown, Collinstown passed away on Tuesday, September 5th, 2017. After beginning his hurling career with Glenidan, he togged out for the new Lough Lene Gaels club which was formed in 1969 as the result of an amalgamation between Glenidan and Collinstown. Maurice served Lough Lene Gaels with distinction as a forward of note up until his retirement in the late 1970s, winning a Westmeath junior hurling championship medal in 1973.
His sons Martin, Maurice and Kevin also represented the Gaels. Later Martin and Maurice lined out with Brownstown while Kevin hurled with Castlepollard. In keeping with the Gavigan family's strong affinity with the GAA, Maurice's wife Eilish and daughter Veronica both served Lough Lene Gaels Camogie Club as Chairpersons while his granddaughter Elysha is a present player.
