Lavey proved too strong for Faughanvale in last night’s Derry senior football championship opener as they came away from Owenbeg with a 2-21 to 1-8 victory.

Downey cousins Matthew and Conor were in fine form for the winners, combining for 2-9 over the hour including two second-half goals.

Lavey had run up a 0-9 to 0-3 lead after 25 minutes but a two-pointer by Eoin McElhinney would help Faughanvale to trim their deficit down to three come the half-time whistle.

Lavey landed the first three points of the restart and then hit the jackpot with a Conor Downey in the 45th minute, which made it 1-15 to 0-4.

Four minutes later and the ball would be back in Faughanvale’s net, with Matthew supplying the finish this time, and the points of Fintan Bradley, Matthew Downey and Rian Collins would grow the lead before more singles via Niall Toner and Ryan Muholland rounded off the winning tally ahead of a late consolation goal at the other end from Jude Bryson.

The first round of the Derry SFC resumes this evening when holders Newbridge face Kilrea in Owenbeg (7.30pm), with six more games on the schedule over the weekend.
