Mayo recorded their second consecutive win in Division 1 of the Allianz Football League after seeing off 14-man Dublin by 1-18 to 2-9 in Castlebar this afternoon.
Darragh Beirne struck a 45th minute goal which proved key for the hosts against the capital men who saw defender Sean McMahon red carded five minutes into the second-half.
Andy Moran’s side had held a 0-10 to 1-5 lead at half-time, with Luke Breathnach having netted the Dubs 1-0 to 0-2 in front in the third minute, and the Westerners would make the most of their numerical advantage in the second-half by goaling through Beirne five minutes later and sending over points via Ryan O’Donoghue and Diarmuid O’Connor.
Paddy Small’s goal in the 53rd minute brought Ger Brennan’s team back to within four points, but Cian McHale (free) and Jack Carney steadied the Mayo ship with a couple of points before Sam Callinan and Jordan Flynn rounded off the winning tally.
Mayo now join Donegal at the top of the Division 1 table with two wins from two ahead of the teams’ third round meeting in Letterkenny two weeks from today, while the Dubs and Monaghan will be looking for their first win of the league campaign when the two sides meet at Croke Park on Saturday week.
