Many tributes have been paid to a well-known GAA coach who died suddenly while out for a run last week.

Cork native Tommy Daly, who was only 42, has been described as a ‘driving force’ of hurling in the Mourne area of Co. Down. He coached and hurled for Warrenpoint and was also a coach with Longstone GAC.

In a heartfelt tribute, Warrenpoint GAA said: “With heavy hearts, the Gaels of Cumann Pheadair Naofa extend our heartfelt condolences to Maria, Cara, Conor, Sé and wider Daly and Fitzpatrick family circles on the sudden and tragic passing of our great friend, teammate and mentor Tommy Daly.

“Tommy came to Warrenpoint almost 15 years ago, and from the start energised Hurling within our club. As a player, he was pivotal in the winning of the Junior Championship in 2022. As a coach, he was always on hand to spread knowledge and enthusiasm for the game he loved.

“A Cork man to the bone, he was often on the field in red and white, and as player-manager of the Senior hurlers, led a memorable weekend to his home club of Ballygiblin in 2019.

“He spearheaded a number of crucial initiatives; a County Hurling strategy, our own Hurling Pathway document, and we were all delighted in the revival of Mourne Hurling, a cause he threw everything into over the past number of years.

“His passion for GAA, Hurling, playing and most importantly for teaching, inspiring and leading our young Gaels will inspire us in the years to come. He will be sorely missed by all and no words will ever do justice to the long-lasting legacy Tommy leaves behind in Warrenpoint.”

Longstone GAC also posted on Facebook: “A husband, a father, a friend, and our coach, Tommy Daly played many parts at Longstone GAC.

“Our sincere condolences go out to Maria, Cara, Conor, Sé and all the Daly and Fitzpatrick families on the sudden passing of Tommy.

“Tommy was a great coach who was involved with many of our underage teams and always had an encouraging word and smile for all our players.

“Tommy will be truly missed by everyone at Longstone GAC.”
