Caolan Mooney has made a surprise return to the Down football fold.
The RGU Downpatrick clubman announced his inter-county retirement following the Mourne County’s All-Ireland SFC preliminary quarter-final defeat to Galway last summer, but has now reversed that decision according to RTÉ.
Mooney’s return is another boost to Conor Laverty’s side who are all but assured of promotion to Division 2 of the Allianz Football League after winning their first five games in Division 3. They face three-in-a-row chasing Donegal in their Ulster SFC opener on April 26 in Letterkenny, although Donegal manager Jim McGuinness remains hopeful that redevelopment works will be completed in time for Ballybofey to host the game.
Down could have Danny Magill back for the trip to the North-West as he continues his recovery from the ACL injury he sustained while playing for Burren against Castlewellan in the county SFC last summer.
