Matthew Tierney's injury-time goal saw Galway snatch a 1-8 to 1-6 victory against Armagh at the Athletic Grounds this evening.
With the game all square in the third minute of injury-time, Tierney made the most of a perfectly floated in pass from Shane Walsh to punch the ball past Ethan Rafferty and stun the hosts.
Rafferty had netted himself in the 22nd minute with a long punt into the Galway square and it helped the Orchard men to lead by 1-4 to 0-3 at the half.
The wind would be at the Tribesmen’s back for the second-half though and they fought back reduce their arrears and the points of Walsh (free) and Tomo Culhane had them level with two minutes left in regulation.
Tierney struck the crucial blow (see it below) for the Connacht champions but they’d have to survive one last scare that saw ‘keeper Conor Gleeson deny Jarlath Og Burns with a save from point blank.
The result means that a win for Padraic Joyce’s men next weekend against holders Kerry could be enough to earn them a place in the Division 1 final.
