Opening wins for Galway, Kilkenny and Laois in Walsh Cup

Henry Shefflin’s Galway side made an impressive start to their new season by handing Westmeath a 3-27 to 0-20 defeat in Ballinasloe this afternoon.

A goal from Martin McManus late in the first-half was what saw the Tribesmen leading at the half (1-11 to 0-11) before thoroughly producing the second-half goods to blow the visitors away.

Evan Niland finished with 0-18 to his name and further goals from McManus and Martin Kennedy helped secure the 15-point win for Shefflin’s charges.

In Mountrath, Willie Maher secured his first competitive win as Laois manager as his side edged out Wexford by 0-20 to 0-18.

Having led by three at the break, the O’Moore men outscored their opponents by 0-4 to 0-2 in the closing stages with Mossy Keyes and Jordan Walshe send over vital scores for down the home stretch.

Derek Lyng also enjoyed his first win as Kilkenny supremo after the Cats overcame Offaly’s stiff challenge by 2-19 to 0-21 in Callan.

Goals from Ian Byrne and Tom Phelan proved key for the Leinster champions, with the latter’s strike on 57 minutes helping to fend off the Faithful men’s spirited comeback.
