Sean Og Farrell and Cillian Farrell celebrate with Edenderry fans

With a combined age of 96, Sean Óg Farrell and Cillian Farrell came off the bench in the closing stages to guide Edenderry to a first Offaly JHC title in 24 years yesterday.

All-Ireland SHC medallists with Offaly in 1994 and ’98 respectively, the veteran duo’s guile and experience proved invaluable as they combined for the insurance goal in a 3-14 to 1-13 win over Ballinamere at O’Connor Park. Former Meath hurling manager Cillian, who is awaiting a hip replacement and only re-joined the panel last week, eased Edenderry’s nerves with a 63rd minute point before putting the result beyond doubt with a well-finished goal after Sean Óg and team captain David Hanlon had played him in.

“Sean Óg is 51 at Christmas. He’s exceptionally fit, he’s running marathons and 10ks. He set me up for the goal. He has a great head; he’s been around for a long time. The man has given his life to hurling. There’s 96 years between us,” 45-year-old Cillian enthused.
