Sligo GAA has been plunged into mourning following the death of young football star Red Óg Murphy.

The Curry native was a talented and well-known footballer who played for his local club and the Sligo senior team, as well as DCU where he had been studying primary school teaching.

Just 21 years old, his death has rocked the Sligo GAA community.

In 2019, Murphy returned home for an eight-month stint in Australia with AFL club North Melbourne and he would go on to feature in all of Sligo’s league and championship outings in 2020 and 2021, scoring 1-15 over a dozen games.

He had opted off the Sligo panel this year but his performances for DCU over the past few months saw him earning a place on the Sigerson Cup Team of the Year.

Tributes have been pouring in after news of his passing broke yesterday evening.

"The community is devastated here," neighbour and Sligo county councillor Martin Connolly is quoted saying by Independent.ie. "The parish of Curry in Sligo, the parish that he played for, the community is absolutely devastated.

"Speechless is the word I'd put on it. People are walking around in a daze, they don't know what has happened. Our sympathies is all we can do, to give our sympathies to his dad and mum, Geraldine and Redmond, and his two brothers.”
