Donegal captain Patrick McBrearty says he and his team mates are “willing to see the bigger picture” when it comes to each of their roles within the group.

Not a role he has been used to in the past, McBrearty has been primarily used off the bench this summer by manager Jim McGuinness, replacing fellow veteran Michael Murphy last time out to score 0-3 in the 20-point victory over Meath which sealed the Ulster champions’ place in this Sunday’s All-Ireland SFC final against Kerry (3.30pm).

Speaking to GAA.ie in the build-up to the decider at Croker, McBrearty says the competition for places is massive at the moment within the team and that he knows his role when he gets his minutes on the pitch.

"I think every player wants to start, but obviously you've got to see the bigger picture," said the Kilcar clubman.

"Worked well for Armagh last year. Stefan Campbell, he's the main one obviously. Everyone knows about Stefan Campbell coming in. Armagh's squad probably won them the All-Ireland last year. There's really, really good players in the Donegal set-up. Can't get into the 26, never mind the first 15.

"There's massive, massive competition for places. I'm up against Oisín, Michael and Conor O’Donnell. It's tough for positions there at the minute. I know my role, I have my role when I come in. The other boys as well, Caolan McGonagle, Jason McGee, Odhrán McFadden Ferry come in the last day. Dáíre Ó Baoill can't get in.

"That's what I think is really, really good about this group. They're willing to see the bigger picture, when you have this phenomenal impact."
