The late Darren Whelan

A Limerick GAA club is mourning the tragic death of one of its star players.

Kildimo Pallaskenry has paid a heartfelt tribute to 23-year-old Darren Whelan who died following a fall while on holiday on the Greek island of Ios last Sunday morning. Darren played both senior hurling and football for the club and had travelled to Greece with friends to celebrate graduating from LIT where he studied civil engineering.

"It is with a very heavy heart that I write this post today, following the tragic and untimely passing of our comrade and fellow Kildimo Pallaskenry GAA club member Darren Whelan," the club said in an online post.

"We extend our deepest sympathy and heartfelt prayers to Darren’s mother Geraldine, father Eddie and brothers Gavin and Eamon and extended family on the loss of their beloved son and brother.

"To all those who knew Darren, as a friend or as a team mate, we offer our condolences and support at this difficult time. Darren had a positive and enthusiastic outlook on life and was an exciting, skilful and popular player who always gave 100%.

"Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam."
