Ex-Down star Hughes returns to club duty

Down's Danny Hughes

Former Down All Star Danny Hughes has returned to the playing field with his native Saval after a three-year exile.

Hughes earned his All Star at right half-forward for his performances during the Mourne men's run to the 2010 All-Ireland SFC final and called time on his inter-county career four years later.

The now 36-year-old retired from club duty the following summer and went on to have a managerial stint with Newry Shamrocks but, in a surprise, has now opted to line-out again for Saval in Division 1 of the All County League.

"I've got the hunger back," Hughes told The Irish News. "I'm not putting any pressure on myself. I actually just want to enjoy it now because, before I quit, that wasn't the case."
