Many tributes have been paid to the much-loved Offaly GAA supporter PJ Molloy who has passed away.

Aged just 35, PJ was originally from Walsh Island but lived in Tullamore. He was a familiar face at GAA matches in Offaly and further afield, and was one of the happiest people in Croke Park when the Faithful County were crowned All-Ireland U20 football champions last August. He also loved music and all things Irish, and endeared himself to all who knew him.

Leading the tributes to PJ, Walsh Island GAA club said: “Known the length and breadth of Ireland as being one of Offaly’s biggest supporters in hail, rain or shine, it will be a sad day in the future not to see and hear PJ supporting his beloved team anymore.”

Rhode and Offaly football star Niall McNamee tweeted: “Condolences to PJ Molloy’s family and friends. Always there in the good days and the bad. If he asked you for a selfie, you knew it had been a good day. A great fella.”

Legendary Irish rebel music band The Wolfe Tones also paid tribute to the deceased by saying: “We’re very sorry to hear of the untimely passing of a great Wolfe Tones fan from Tullamore, PJ Molloy. PJ never missed a gig in the Offaly area over the years and was in the front row in October when we were in Tullamore at the Canal Quarter Festival.

“Our sincere condolences to PJ’s family and many friends. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.”

PJ is survived by his brothers Martin and John, extended family and wide circle of friends. His funeral Mass will take place in Walsh Island tomorrow and those attending are being asked to wear a jersey to acknowledge his love of sport.
