A civic reception is in the pipeline for recently-retired Limerick hurling star Declan Hannon.

The five-time All-Ireland SHC winning captain called time on his illustrious career a few weeks ago and now a local county councillor wants to honour his achievements. Fianna Fáil councillor Bridie Collins made the proposal at a recent meeting of Adare-Rathkeale Municipal District, which was seconded by Fine Gael’s Adam Teskey.

It was eventually decided to put forward a motion proposing the civic reception for Hannon at the next full meeting of Limerick City and County Council on November 24.

The 32-year-old Adare clubman last month decided to bring the curtain down on a 15-year career in which he became hurling's most decorated team captain. The brilliant centre back skippered Limerick to five All-Irelands - including their first in 45 years in 2018 - two Allianz Leagues, while he also won seven Munster SHC medals and three All-Stars in a stellar career.
