The GAA marks its 140th birthday today

Today sees the GAA marking a milestone as it celebrates its 140th birthday.

It was on this date in 1884 that the Association was founded in the Hayes Hotel in Thurles, with its founding members being Michael Cusack, Maurice Davin, John Wyse Power, John McKay, J. K. Bracken, Joseph O'Ryan and Thomas St. George McCarthy.

Today, to help mark the 140th anniversary of this event, the GAA’s History Committee will attend Hayes Hotel for a meeting at noon. They will be joined by Munster GAA president and GAA vice president Ger Ryan, as well as other Tipperary officials to make a presentation to the hotel.

Patrick McKay, who is the great grandson of John McKay who was elected first secretary, along with Cusack and John Wyse Power in 1884, will also be attending the milestone event in the famous Thurles hotel.
