"Tyrone still have it all to prove"

Tyrone's Padraig Hampsey, Richard Donnelly, Darren McCurry and Michael McKernan dejected after the defeat to Kerry

Tyrone great Peter Canavan says the Red Hands “still have it all to prove” as they get set to commence their championship campaign this weekend.

Cavan travel to Omagh on Saturday to begin their Ulster SFC title defence against the hosts who head into their first championship encounter under joint-managers Fergal Logan and Brian Dooher.

While they competed well in all of their National League outings bar the last one against Kerry - to whom they conceded 6-16 - Canavan knows that improvement will be needed at Healy Park this weekend.

“It's been a few weeks now since Kerry were humbled in Killarney. The one positive is that it's better to get a wake-up call like that in the National League rather than in a knockout championship contest,” the two-time All-Ireland winner wrote in his column for Sky Sports GAA.

“The Kingdom went to town on our kick-outs that day. Tyrone don't have the luxury of having a big ball-winning midfielder like other teams. Cavan have Gearoid McKiernan. But the Red Hands don't have that option.

“It has been a trait with Tyrone teams in previous years, we've had to manage without being blessed with big dominant midfielders.

“Up front, the forward division has been playing in patches. At times, they looked very good. At times, they looked ordinary. Tyrone still have it all to prove.”
