Galway manager Micheál Donoghue said Michael Coleman was very much in his team’s thoughts during last night’s league victory over Clare in Salthill.
An All-Ireland SHC winner with the Tribesmen in 1988, Michael passed away in an accident on Friday evening while clearing up storm damage around his home in Crumlin, Ballyglunin.
A minute’s silence was observed in his honour before throw-in at Pearse Stadium, where a brace of first-half goals from Anthony Burns helped the hosts to a 2-21 to 0-20 win against the All-Ireland champions.
Speaking to TG4 Sport afterwards, Donoghue paid tribute to the late three-time All Star winner.
“Michael was very much in our thoughts. Everyday he went out and wore the jersey with distinction and we had to make sure today that we matched that for him and his family,” he said.
“Look, a very sad occasion. It’s going to be a tough week for everyone in Galway, but particularly for the Coleman family, and we’ll be there to support them whatever way we can.”
