After three surgeries on his knee and more than two-and-a-half years on the sidelines, Limerick All-Ireland winner Shane Dowling has made his long-awaited return to action.

Dowling, who was forced to retire from inter-county hurling at the age of 27 in 2020 due to persistent injuries, came on as a substitute in Na Piarsaigh's 0-20 to 0-16 City Senior Hurling League round 2 victory over Monaleen at Caherdavin yesterday evening.

Taking to Twitter, the former Treaty County star expressed his delight at making an unlikely playing comeback.

"An image I thought, or was told anyway, I would never see again!" he tweeted.

"32 long months later, some feeling to finally get back out on the pitch last night.

"Onwards and upwards."
