The Government has brought forward the increase in spectator numbers at sporting events to “facilitate increased attendances at matches” this weekend.

Minister of State for Sport Jack Chambers revealed in a tweet this morning that the changes will come into effect from this Saturday.

That means 500 supporters will be permitted to attend championship games where the venues have a capacity in excess of 5,000.

The announcement comes after this Saturday's Leinster SHC semi-final double-bill was switched to Croke Park to enable 8,000 fans attend.

It is a designated test event at GAA HQ to allowing larger numbers of spectators attend matches once again.
