New Westmeath hurling manager Seoirse Bulfin is hoping a new regional competition will help him to unearth fresh talent.

The competition, which has been successfully run in other counties, will see neighbouring clubs combine to form one team and play in a series of games, culminating in an All-Star selection taking on the county senior team in a high-profile challenge match early in the New Year. The regional competition is an opportunity for players who aren’t currently involved with the county panel to showcase their talent and also to play alongside – rather than against players – from neighbouring clubs.  

“This initiative has worked successfully in other counties and I’m confident we can replicate that success here in Westmeath,” Bulfin told club representatives before last Sunday’s SHC semi-final between Lough Lene Gaels and Clonkill at TEG Cusack Park.

The Limerick man is rumoured to be lining up former Westmeath manager Shane O’Brien as a coach. O’Brien, who led the Lake County to Joe McDonagh Cup success in 2021, managed the Dublin U20s this year and was also part of the senior management headed up by Micheál Donoghue, who has since reprised his role as Galway manager.
