One of the greatest hurlers of all-time celebrates his 50th birthday today.

Birr and Offaly legend Brian Whelahan won every honour in the game, including two All-Ireland SHC medals with Offaly, four All-Ireland club SHC medals with Birr, four All-Stars and two Hurler of the Year awards. He was the only player of the modern era to be named on the GAA's Hurling Team of the Millennium in 2000.

The iconic half back's big birthday was mentioned by his former Offaly team-mate Michael Duignan during yesterday's All-Ireland SHC final coverage on RTÉ.
