Just remind us again of how other parties have been in power since the foundation of the state ?? Labour from time to time and Clann na Poblachta are only ones I can think of.

Sinn Féin are running part of Ireland for Britain. Not too well either. Even worse housing waiting lists and social decline. Most of all for the people who vote for them. Avoid that one,

The Greens as well, but we all know how much of a disaster that was. The 'Big Two' have happily thrown them under the bus time and time again. The same 'Big Two' who said they would never get into bed with each other and yet here we are. Granted. I wouldn't be a huge fan. But they're problem is that some of the old guard would take Bertie and Charlie McGreevy back and throw the present leaders under the bus. Maybe they'd be right, but not a chance I would be willing to take. The problem for them all is that eaten bread is soon forgotten! The problem for the Irish electorate is that the lack of viable alternatives for Government, people don't fully trust the opposition parties to keep things afloat if they got in, so many stick with FF or FG in the interim until a strong alternative appears. However its not looking good at the minute. Sinn Fein are on a similar level to FF and FG, but they have lost direction. They have been willing to sell their soul to get into power, but the change was such that they have alienated many of their long-term hardened supporters. And FF/FG are willing to bend over backwards to keep Sinn Fein out of power, as they and the British Government still believe the party leadership is controlled or directed by the PIRA Army Council. Labour could have become a major force, especially in rural areas, but instead they shrank under lack of conviction, are now just vying to be a junior coalition partner.. Social Democrats are just Fine Gael light, no real substance, height of their ambition is to be a junior coalition partner, score a few ministerial posts and pensions. Aontu are actually not bad option at a distance, but don't cover the whole Country, they are a one man show basically. I don't vote sinn Fein but I don't think what they're doing in the North is a fair comparison. There's no real fiscal power there. You're throwing out the crumbs dropped from Britain. It's not a legitimate economic entity.

What do you think is the solution then? To be honest I thought FG/Lab 2011 was an opportunity. We know how that went. I am from a labour family, but have pretty much given up at this stage.

Fine Gael ran from responsibility in Northern Ireland. They don't run candidates. They and FF were afraid of the powerful Unionist lobby.

You are wrong. It was the policies of the Fianna Fail and Progressive Democrat coalition government of 2002 - 2007, which was returned with an even greater majority in 2007, that planted the seeds that led to the bank guarantee of 2008 and subsequent IMF arrival in 2010. Fine Gael were not any part of government and were trenchant opponents of Fianna Fail at this time, coming into government in 2011.
