To have that alone is unheard of and shows what Scotstown has, I think a lot small clubs around the country and particularly in Monaghan fork out huge sums of money for lads that won a championship ten plus years ago. In house management might be a thankless job but surely is better long term for most clubs in terms of developing young lads for future success !

Would agree with this. Clubs hire outside because the club over the road did this and finished higher in the league than them.

Just curious … you reference this active transfer market. Every other senior club in Monaghan has had players transferred in that have won county titles Ballybay had 2 Cavan men, Clontibret have had a few back in the day too. Most clubs in Monaghan have a player transfer into their club. Cavan would be the same. So you phrase it as Scotstown are wheeling and deeling 4/5 players a year veterngaa (Monaghan) - Posts: 879 - 11/11/2025 13:35:30 2643997 Link 0 |

Scullion a Derry man but maybe lives in Scotstown? Regardless, I reckon you could round up a few of us off this Hoganstand forum that could manage that Scotstown team to the exact point they are now. Maybe it'll matter who the manager is when they reach the Ulster final and play a top class team like Kilcoo, but until then, any man off the street could manage this Scotstown team to a county championship.

Spoken like somebody not involved. There isn't enough quality coaches in clubs. If lads are going to train all year round, they want to be getting trained by somebody that can have them in the best possible position to compete. Local men are great to have involved, but how many clubs have credible men that could take over their senior team?

Cavan gaels would of had their fair share of transfers over the years. Your active championship hasn't benefited your county team much lately though has it..

Seriously,we're praising Scotstown for only using from within their own (massive) resources? Diarmuid Scullion is a born and bred Derry man. Like Jack McCarron was born and reared in Scotshouse. A very good coach hence he has been with Derry Minors, Westmeath Seniors and now Cavan Seniors. He married a Corrigan girl from Scotstown. But he is not a Scotstown "club man".Nor is O'Brien. Nor is Jack They were all brought on board to try get an Ulster Club.Take Scullion and O'Brien off the ticket and you're left with David McCague,Donal Morgan and Fergus Caulfield. They're "club men". Ps Colin McAree, Kieran Donnelly,Mattie McGleenan,Peter Donnelly etc. if you want to go back a few years. Matchwatcher (Monaghan) - Posts: 16 - 11/11/2025 14:52:18 2644011 Link 2 |

You mustn't have been in the Hyde recently veterngaa. Surface has to be the best in the country right now, major works completed around the ground and it stands up as one of the better provincial grounds out there. If we are one of the worst , we must have a few Emirate stadiums out there that I haven't seen.

The argument that Cavan has a more competitive championship than us is not based on anything factual, rather mere voyeuristic begrudgery, Unless someone comes up with anything close to a reasonable argument, it is best ignored for what it is The narrative around mid Cavan before their championship started did not include Kingscourt coming from virtual obscurity and cruising to an unbeatable run to the title, it was all about Crosserlough, Gowna et al. They did not take into account the impact 1 Meath Player could have on the entire championship, contrast that to McGee (an all Ireland finalist) with Corduff who had little or no impact across 5 games {and 5 teams} in Monaghan (ala Murnin with Iniskeen last year). So one import had no impact on our championship, the other was a major factor in winning Cavan's, and it's supposed to be more competitive. Go figure The Cavan championship may well be a competitive one, but at what level one would realistically have to ask. Scotstown lost 1 and drew 2 (if you include the final they could easily have lost) on their way to the Monaghan title. They have improved throughout but it was the courageous decision to introduce a few younger lads that has given them the impetus, they would not have beaten Iniskeen had they not done so IMO. They looked good against Glenties on Sunday. Nothing went for Glenties, when they were on top early on they missed some good opportunities which proved costly, also, like in our championship, the ref let alot go, but above all else they were not prepared for what Scotstown brought to proceedings, tactically, technically and physically superior throughout. Will they win it out? who knows, but if they show up on any given day and repeat Sundays performance, they will be damn hard to beat mhunicean_abu (Monaghan) - Posts: 1084 - 11/11/2025 19:48:18 2644058 Link 0 |

good point...emyvale also got a good goalkeeper in from a neighbouring club...where was that again? oh yea - the same guy probably starts for every other club in the county although I think it was the nature of the mccarron transfer that annoys people...for me its old news now and i dont really care anymore MalsBalls (Monaghan) - Posts: 243 - 12/11/2025 09:35:28 2644106 Link 0 |

Emyvale giving interviews like they are some sort of underdog story this year is a mad take farneygael3 (Monaghan) - Posts: 446 - 12/11/2025 11:12:00 2644136 Link 0 |

I know what you're saying, in terms of getting the highest quality coaches in. But that's the point most the clubs are paying nonsense journey men who won a county title in their playing days ect. My point being if the club didn't have to waste the same expense on paying an outside man instead spend it on developing their own the outcome should become far higher.

Some crazy figures do the rounds, thousands upon thousands. Would literally pay for a full time coach in the school's and overseeing the juvenile clubs development (like krissy mckaguie in Slaughneil) not saying this is a correct approach either as whatever hopes we have as remaining a volunteer association this would be another nail, but money can be spent better in the club instead of an outside man/men coming in to bleed the place dry over 2/3 years and away. Then repeat cycle with next men in

In fairness, we are arguably the least competitive football championship in the country. Scotstown just won a county title without Ryan O'Toole and Conor McCarthy, two of the first names on our county senior's team sheet. What have they won- 9 of the last 11 championships? And it's only going to be worse next year when they have those lads back, and every other contending team sounds like they're being hit badly by lads emigrating/going on their travels (because why on earth would they bother staying at home, knowing you haven't a hope of winning a championship). We might be competitive in the sense that any of the rest of the teams in the senior championship could beat one another on any given day, but we're not competitive at all in terms of who's going to win the championship. Unfortunately, when one team has such an advantage over everyone else in terms of numbers, there's only ever going to be one result, barring a shock that might come along once every 5 years or so. Couldn't agree more. Clubs go after big names that carry very little weight behind them, hoping for a mercurial manager to come in and put lipstick on pigs so the committee can all celebrate their own brilliance come the end of the year. Invariably these journeymen managers got involved with a club like Scotstown where it's harder to loose than win and they take this CV to an unwitting committee in another county who fork over heaps of money for little between the ears. The notion of a journeyman ever being a good thing is laughable too - as if they care about the long term health of the juveniles or overworked college player? They'll bleed them for everything they can to further their own CV and line their pockets elsewhere. I've seen it time and again. The sooner the revenue, both sides of the border, come down on these parasites to the GAA - the better. Jjoniel79 (Monaghan) - Posts: 246 - 12/11/2025 16:20:51 2644197 Link 0 |
